Protesters block hotel being used for asylum seekers

  1. They want to know “why they were not consulted about the decision.”

Probably because it’s not their business who a hotel chooses to let out its rooms to.

  2. I can’t imagine having to flee your home because of a war. I can’t imagine having to go to another far away country that, maybe the language you don’t understand. Seperated from the rest of your family, perhaps some having to actively fight in the war. And then, at the end of the journey, there is these dickheads blocking your way. Send them to Ukraine, the people blocking the way, and let them get a feel for how good they have it.

  3. This should be interesting, r/Ireland isn’t going to get away with calling people from the countryside ‘dole junkies’ or ‘right wingers’ this time.

Could it be that ‘normal’ Irish people have a problem with immigrants being stuffed into hotels, here, there and yonder with absolutely no foresight?

    🍿

  4. If you don’t know this ‘hotel’, it’s in the middle of absolute nowhere. I don’t know how the migrants could do anything without cars.

  5. I am very interested in where this all ends up. We will have towns eating themselves as Hoteliers opt to house asylum seekers rather than tourists. In many tourist towns, an ecosystem exists to cater for that market – gift shops, cafes, activities. These are all at the whim of Hoteliers. There are already undercurrents of anger and unease in some of these places, this will only intensify. I dont care where you lie on the matter but stuffing people into hotel rooms is not the answer. I lean very left, but that’s not to say that i have to agree with this solution just because it accommodates people, albeit crudely. The people will revolt, there will be more violence and arson and the impact will cause tension and feuding in many towns. Unfortunately, despite being wrong on many things, the extreme right will view this as validation for their cause. Nothing is black and white, people are allowed to have their concerns heard.

  6. Who makes the rules ?

    Who makes the laws ?

Who is in control of all this stuff ?

Why won’t these people protest those in power, the ones that are in control of this stuff ?

Why not go to Dáil Éireann ?

That’s what it means to punch down rather than up !

  7. Ukrainians have moved into the house next to us last Friday. My wife and I took around a box full of cakes last night and welcomed them and their family to the neighbourhood. Weird how different people react differently. They’re just people.

  8. Protesters: House the Irish first!

Everyone left of center: Okay let’s build social housing

    Protesters: Noooooo you’re communists!

  9. Like this is just stupid and I bet there was a Facebook group set up before all this by someone from the Irish freedom party to stir up hate cause I have seen it happen in a few places. At the end of the day rural communities can barely survive with depopulation if I was a farmer I’d be trying to hire a few asylum seekers instead to being a racist idiot.

  10. They blocked a Pizza Delivery man last night…an actual medieval siege. They are just upset as they were not told. Sure it was the same when the Hotel was in business , all bookings needed to be rubber stamped by the town.

Fact is people don’t like large populations of other people (strangers) being landed on them, its like a proxy invasion. There will be all sorts of reasons given , but plenty of people will just feel a deep unease that cannot necessarily be rationalised.

I say there is never a solution when there are two parties without a common enemy!!

  11. ” Last year, the council ruled that Magowna House was not suitable to accommodate Ukrainian asylum seekers ”

I do wonder what the alternative was if that was the case?

  12. Seems like r/ireland is the minority with their views. The “Far Right” seem to be growing in numbers as regular Irish people can’t afford to rent, buy homes, stay warm and in some places even field their children.

I’ll be the first to admit that there are many elite people that gave done far more damage to this country than any asylum seeker, but I do wonder when the penny is going to drop with some people – The uncontrolled immigration has gone to far and people have had enough.

  13. **Edit: I’ve received gold from folks who hate immigrants, so firstly, thanks but no thanks. Ireland is by far MUCH better because of Immigrants, so anyone who thinks I was supporting your ’cause’, you’re wrong. Secondly, the care these people rightly need is huge, we need to give more, not less, than this kind of paltry service.**

They were on Morning Ireland, (or the local councillor was), giving their concerns-

    1. Any success at integration before had happened because the locals had pushed themselves to help; the department had done nothing for these people.

    2. These weren’t families but instead adult men coming.

    3. The building itself had lost a fire cert, had no septic tank, and was in the middle of nowhere – the effort needed by the local community was going to be huge.

    4. They had zero notice; nothing, a memo late Thursday evening that said the contract was reestablished, but nothing about the numbers or where they were from, even.

There is a huge amount wrong with the way they protested, but honestly I don’t think their concerns would have even raised an eyebrow if they hadn’t made efforts to get themselves on the news.

  14. So a closed hotel in the middle of nowhere has a small number of people staying in it.

What are they actually protesting about?

They’re letting on as if they’re concerned about the asylum seekers but scratch beneath the surface, it sounds like regular xenophobia.

Blocking the pizza delivery guy to stop them getting food too. Redneck behaviour.

  15. Looking at the wider context… It would be great to know how many Ukrainian refugees has the USA accepted so far, being one of the main sides in this NATO-Russia war. Seems to me Europe is the one suffering mostly here (along with Ukraine) for both Russia’s and America’s interests.
