Martin Jonsson: Seven people living in a single-family property – if that’s our vision of the future, count me out

  1. Shoving multiple non-related families in the same apartment/home is what was done during the soviet communist era in the USSR…No thanks.
Start by discouraging speculators by raising very high taxes on unoccupied dwellings maybe?

  2. I would love to live with some friends but eventually people are supposed to form families and kids. Suddenly 7 people easily turns into 21+ people. That’s just not feasible in one house

  3. One thing I want to understand is why construction in Luxembourg is so expensive. In a country where buildable lots are rare I understand the price of land but where do the construction prices come from? From someone who builds directly on the other side in Germany I know that the constitution in Germany (only a few meters from the Luxembourgish border) is only half the price. How can this be? The majority of the construction costs is materials and workers don’t earn 400% the salary of an worker in Germany. Why do construction prices explode in this side of the river?

  4. Indeed different approach is required, but not by shoving ppl into one house. There are housing blocks or residentials for ppl over 55 yrs old, similar approach can be considered for ppl younger than 30 yrs old or 35 yrs old.

Build several blocks of individual studios, 30~40 sqm per unit, make them affordable (500~800 euros/month may be with little government support for building). This will give younger ppl opportunities to save up and help rental market to calm down by reducing demand for smaller houses. Furthermore, it will help companies to attract more talents from overseas and let younger luxembourgish stay in the country. With less spending on rent, people will have more spending power and help local businesses as well (bars, restaurants etc…).

Country’s building projects are too much dialed into houses/flats for a family with kids and supply for young individuals or couples are very limited. There is no stepping stone with housing in Luxembourg, there are only 3 options available now, “buy full size house with 40 yrs mortgage” or “pay almost 50% of your salary into rent” or “leave the country”.
