Output of Finland’s newest nuclear plant throttled because electricity is too cheap | News

  1. I hope this settles the argument that says nuclear energy production is not flexible and cannot follow load.

  2. The reason is that hydropower has to output as much as possible at the moment, the reservoirs are full and they would have to otherwise lose all that energy. It is not profitable to sell the excess energy in short term, stock market prices are showing negative about every night.

  3. That’s a good thing. Means there is oportunity to increase the export capacity(the baltic states will always need more), more heating, cooking and transportation can go full electric.

Meanwhile others struggle to give up coal and will do that for the next 10 years, in most cases switching to gas that will just create an issue further down the line.

  4. It’s always preferable to throttle nuclear when no fossile is left. Saves a bit in fuel and overall wear and tear of the central.

Let’s hope we get more interconnect soon, some countries are in dire need of clean energy.

  5. This is bad for nuclear. If the capacity factor of nuclear goes down from what it could be, it makes the cost of producing nuclear energy higher. And who want’s to invest in nuclear in such circumstances?
