I was just appreciating the amazing tactile and responsive feel of the golden OPEN door button of the NS trains. Once pressed you are met with a satisfying steampunky-hydrolic *kssss-pffp* before the doors open up for you.
HOWEVER, did you ever stop to wonder there is also a BLUE button, presumably for closing the door??
I just realised I’ve never pressed the damn thing, the situation never even came up. When would you ever want to close the doors before they close by themselves??
My curiosity makes me ask of you: did you ever press the blue button? And, how did it make you feel?

I think you can actually press it and the door closes the normal way. I have seen some teenagers do it to fuck eachother over.
If the train is very full so you’re sitting at the doors, and it’s fucking cold outside, and nobody’s coming for your door, then it’s very nice to be able to close it.
Niet een vraag.
You press it when it’s cold out and the train is gonna be there a while
I press it when the car is full or it’s raining/cold
I often press this button, i don’t need more annoying peeps in my cabin most folks will walk over to the next one when closed 😉
I press it when I see someone running , trying to catch the train. (It s a joke. I don t take the train)
There is also this silver-colored keyhole above. With the key, the conducteur can close all doors. (And use the golden button to open all doors)
The traindoors don’t close by themselves. There is a NS person that does that, after checking there are no people stuck in the doors. They turn a key (the hole above the buttons) closes all doors and push a blue button to close the last one they’re standing in

Even if you never pressed the button, did you notice the sign right beneath the buttons and the arrows on the door that indicate the direction of movement?
The blue button is for loading and unloading of passengers only. There’s no pressing the yellow button!
That’s the: “Rijden hond!!” button
Yes the blues button closes the doors, not just that one, but all the doors. It only works when a key enables the button. The conductor has it.
It’s nice and indicative of your cold heart! When you push it when you see someone coming on The stairs trying to catch the train.
You should try it. It will even geen better than the gold button.
(Hear me sound all wicked like a Disney villain)
But aren’t those for the conductors closing the train…
I only just realised they are blue and yellow because those are the NS colours… TIL
Newer trains with electric doors close themselves after 20 seconds or so. It’s very annoying when working on the train at the depot.
And they also hot rid of the close button… these NS buttons are very nice though. Metal all the way through, rated for a lot of presses.
Some say it’s never been pressed.
I’m a train manager (in training) and I use it regularly.
When the train is about to leave, the doors don’t close automatically. It’s because we use our key in that little hole above the buttons. All doors will close when we turn our key, except our own, obviously. After the doors are closed, we do a second check to see if there are no limbs in between the doors and to see if we still have a ‘green light’ for our train to leave.
Then, once inside, we press the blue button at our door. When all doors are closed, the train driver sees a green light on his ‘dashboard’ that signals to them we have closed all doors and it’s safe to leave.
Got one at home, but it does nothing 😄 https://i.imgur.com/N8xsMMx.jpg
I think the design and labeling of these buttons is weird. They look like they’re for NS staff, not riders. I didn’t know to press them until after a few rides I stood behind someone that did it. The button on the outside, with the green LED’s around it, is much more clear.
This is an unknown feature, when the train is in topspeed (130KM/h), you can press this button to give the train driver small powerups of 10KM boosts for 8KM, why isn’t this well known? Very simple, it cost the NS extra money, and the train drivers are not allowed to talk about it It is really cool to feel the sensational extra boosed when awarded to the driver.
When it’s cold and windy and there is a strong draft in the train I usually close the door. If anyone needs to get on the can open de door again.
We pressed the yellow button and right after the blue button so the people behind you got stuck…. Such a fun thing to do when i was younger
Because we’re in a hurry. Ain’t nobody got time to wait
I saw once that a conductor was getting out of the train to see if there were still people left outside, then a kutkind proceeded to press the blue button to close the door. The conductor quickly jumped inside and reprimanded him. He did not get kicked out of the train however, but it was interesting to witness. It was also the only time I saw the blue button used.
I use that button when the train is almost leaving and I see people sprinting to the door I’m standing at.
Can I use it as a visual impairment person? I can see that it is something to do with the doors. Witch one to press, I have no idea.
Conductor presses it to close the door he/she is at
In Winter to prevent the cold when there is nobody else coming in or out and it does a short stop at the station (e.g.: Amsterdam – Brussels in Breda for five to then minutes).
You press that when you get out and your friend is behind you.
Winter, the end of stoptrein, and 15 min till departure
I’ve pressed it when I suspect I’m the last one to enter through that door. Less rewarding than the golden button.
In the winter, when a train is waiting some minutes
The Blue is for repeated satisfaction of hydraulic sounds. Once you enter you press blue -> yellow -> repeat.
Im a guy that sometimes feels uncomfortable in a train due to sickness. The fresh air helps me get control of the situation so im always at the door opening and closing it when ever I want.
I have used it before, closing the doors when it’s freezing outside and the train is busy enough that the landings are crowded. But it’s a rarity, for sure. Mostly used by conductors in combination with the lock above the buttons to control all the doors, I believe.
As a frequent train traveler, it occasionally occurs that one train door doesn’t close when the train manager wants to close them all. If you see that your door stays open while all other doors are closed (and the train manager is not at your door), please press this button. Then your train can depart and you avoid delays.
I see this problem (a door that doesn’t close) approximately twice a year. When it’s not my train but the train before mine, I walk in, press the door close button and immediately walk out again. Passengers in the train always are really surprised by what I am doing then while I am just helping them to depart. It would be easier if people realize that they just could press the ‘door close’ button.
I never pressed it myself, however, I do see it being pressed often by the train conductor. Basically they first use a key to close all the doors (that’s what the big silver thing at the top is for), then they have to use the blue button to close the door once they removed the key.
I’ve seen it used by a passenger a total of one time in the past 4 years where I’ve taken the train nearly on a daily basis. I presume they thought it was too cold.
My son is 4 and my husband taught him that you can close the door by pressing it.
Now I have kid with me who doesn’t want to take a seat until he has closed the doors. I have to unlearn this very annoying behaviour because I just want to sit down. And I don’t want to annoy others by standing still until everyone has entered the train (potentially blocking the way) and closing a door that some people, who are a little bit later, still want to enter. Thanks husband!
I did to close the door when it was raining outside and also a little got inside the train.
I often used it to take pictures of graffiti on the doors.
