  1. Before everyone piles in and starts complaining, have any of you actually participated in the consultation on introducing requirements for planning permission on short term lets?

    No you haven’t?

    Well maybe you should!

    Edit: some context for you

    Consultation description

The increase in the number of short term lets in certain areas, such as coastal towns, national parks and some cities can impact on the availability and affordability of homes to buy or to rent for local people and on the sustainability of communities more broadly. While short term lets can support tourism and the local economy in such areas it is important that this is balanced with meeting the needs of the local community. The government is therefore consulting on planning measures that would help local areas have greater ability to control any future increase in the number of short term lets in their area and support the retention of existing properties to buy or to rent.

This consultation seeks views on the introduction of a short term let use class. In addition it seeks views on the introduction of new permitted development rights to provide flexibility where short term lets are not a local issue, and which allows for this flexibility to be removed where there is local concern. We are additionally seeking views on how homeowners might be provided with flexibility to let out their sole or main home for up to 30 nights in a calendar year.

Edit: last start a fun game.. comment if you have responded to the consultation!

  2. And the people using air bnbs will go to these empty tourtist spots and wonder why all the attractions and amenities they use are so short staffed. Or are shut/closed down. Because all the lower paid renting types have been forced out of the area.

  3. In Edinburgh it can be awful. Especially with students landlords will try to push 11 month contracts to profit from the fringe.

  4. Everywhere, not just tourist hotspots. Not just “young renters” either!! wtf is the reason for that caveat

  5. Do you want £500 rent monthly, or £80 daily for a total of 2400 to act as a hotel? No wonder many are outsourcing to a marketing business, cleaning and maintenance are the only hassle.
