Call for Ireland to formally recognise Palestine state

  1. Looks like it won’t happen with Fine Gael in power as they’ve been sitting on the Occupied Territories Bill, which Fianna Fáil and the Greens supported while Fine Gael opposed it, since 2018.

  2. I mean if one group is using Talmudic, biblical and religious texts to prove their historical ownership of a piece of land the most simple and obvious thing everyone else can do is to follow the same logic for the Palestinians as well [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_the_name_Palestine#:~:text=The%20first%20known%20mention%20is,years%20later%20on%20Padiiset’s%20Statue](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timeline_of_the_name_Palestine#:~:text=The%20first%20known%20mention%20is,years%20later%20on%20Padiiset's%20Statue).

  3. The world isn’t rainbows and unicorns 🦄. It’s A LOT more complicated than that.

Cool recognize Palestine and then what?
All out war? Genocide?(Please don’t reply about existing circumstances).
This whole discussion is putting the cart before the horse. The real question should be what lead to lasting peace and ensure the rights of ALL that live there.

It’s no use just creating a state, affording it all the protections of a state and then it decides cool It’ll just nuke Israel and all the people that live there. (Hamas who are in government have in the past called for the destruction of Israel).
Cool you’re happy with that? basically you’re happy with genocide of Israeli people.
Okay nah they should live side by side, but who determines the constitution? What happens to LGBTQ+ and women rights currently enjoyed by all those that live in Israel? What’s the answer to that, is it nah, we’ll send thoughts and prayers later?

Laws mean nothing if people don’t share your values.
This region operates on the fringe of our liberal civilization.
The two state solution is the generally accepted solution but it’s not a simple solution and there is a lot of work, some virtue signaling is not pragmatic.

  4. Oh good, this old chestnut. Time to bathe in downvotes.

There is no topic quite like this in the country that people are so passionate about yet so ignorant on even the basic facts.

I want Palestine to be free and at peace, but people pretending peace is entirely Israel’s responsibility need to go to the back of the room.

  5. I wonder how many Redditors of Ireland subscribe to “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” A lot from the looks of this thread.

  6. As long as Hamas is in charge in Gaza, which they have been since 2006, the Palestinian people are more at risk from *them* than they are from Israel. They use human shield tactics, siting their rockets and terrorist leaders in residential areas of Gaza, then always have reporters and cameras ready to document the results of *their* actions when Israel fires back. They’re pretty good at using the media for that, but they are the cause of the conflict, and Palestinian civilians are being deliberately pushed in to the crossfire for media attention. Don’t play in to Hamas’ hands, is all I’m saying.

Also: where is Egypt in all this? Gaza has a border on to Egypt, which is always closed for some reason. Why is that, do you think?

  7. Based on which borders? Who will be seen as the leaders of a Palestinian state?

This is just so people can pat themselves on the back but doesn’t do anything.

edit: Downvotes but nobody seems able to explain to me which specific form of Palestine should be recognised.

  8. I think the path forward is extremely like that of the north: international pressure needs to be on Israel, while Palestine may need to accept the bitter pull that the wrongs of the past can’t all be made right and that the Israeli will ultimately have gained from their support (tacit or otherwise) of the cruelty and brutality that has been used on Palestine.

I think I’m many circles the latter has already happened, but the former has not.

  9. Thing is the entirety of the public do , it’s just one party of several people holding back this official status . Misrepresenting the public opinion and interest . FG/FF represents the Irish people as much as the ruling party of Indonesia does . Completely detached from the public yet we’ll vote them in again

  10. Another state where homosexuality gets the death penalty? You guys don’t think there’s enough of those?
