  1. “The defence committees of the Senate and the Chamber of Deputies unanimously approved the start of negotiations by the Defence Ministry to purchase two Scorpene submarines and 54 Abrams tanks.

The parliamentarians also gave the green light to three other procurement programmes, which include the purchase of military equipment worth around €500 million.

Jointly developed by the French Naval Group and Spanish shipbuilder Navantia, Scorpene submarines can dive up to 300 metres into the sea, giving the commander more tactical freedom than on conventional submarines, according to naval-technology.com. They can carry 18 torpedoes and missiles or 30 mines. It is equipped with six 21-inch-diameter torpedo tubes, located at the bow. For two submarines Romania would pay €2bn.

1 billion for 54 Abrams tanks

Senators and lawmakers on the defence committees also approved the purchase of 54 Abrams tanks and 12 other armoured vehicles for complementary missions, at a total cost of €1 billion.”

  2. RO won’t buy any Scorpenes (or at least not as long as they’re seaworthy and someone relevant). Naval Group already won a bid in 2019 to build 4 Gowind corvettes and it was a complete fiasco and the whole affair drags on to this day without a contract being signed (I think one of corvettes was supposed to be ready by now, according to the offer they made during the selection).

Naval Group shouldn’t even be considered as a possible supplier for any kind of equipment at this point (and the same goes for Damen).

  3. My initial reaction was “Why would Romania need submarines?” So I googled a bit and found this:

    [Naval News](https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2022/07/romanias-submarine-ambitions-which-impact-for-the-black-sea-region/):

    >The Romanian Navy (Forțele Navale Române) has maintained a submarine force since World War II and is therefore familiar with submarine operations in the Black Sea. However, the single submarine currently in its fleet, Kilo-class submarine Delfinul, has been inactive and kept in reserve for over 20 years.

So they’re building a submarine force from scratch after 20 years? Why? Submarine forces are *expensive*.

  4. as a romanian i don’t like this intention to buy submarines, not one bit. Submarines are offensive weapons , who are we going to attack? no one of course. to those they say they are gonna be used defensively ,really? against whom? Russia?Hungary? lol (i named these countries ,because they are perceived as our main enemies) so what ,will we be able to defend with 2 submarines against Russia ?

To me the money used to purchase these subs are money we dont have ,and poorly spent!

Without allies and by allies i mean mainly USA , we won’t be able to defend against the real threats! but therein lies the answer i believe, by which i mean these acquisitions aren’t something we want ,but what others want or need to sell ,and we are the ones who must pay for it!

  5. They should learn from the russians, they have a boat that at the same time is a submarine and it is the pride of the black sea fleet, the Moskva /s

  6. Also, as equally important if not as sexy, Romania will also buy 2 SH Sandown-class minehunters from Uk for 150 mil Euro and will Upgrade the Tarantul ships so they can use NSM missiles for another 300 mil.

And hopefully since we will buy the subs from NG it will also fix the issue with the tender won by NG for the 4 corvettes that will be built in Romania, and for the retrofit/ weapons upgrade of the 2 Type-22 Fregates in the Romanian Navy.

It looks like Romania will finally have a small but capable Navy if everything goes well.
