Reading ability of children in England scores well in global survey

  1. Wait, hold on. Forget England.

    > The results saw English pupils leapfrog those in high-performing countries like Finland and Poland in the rankings, while pupils in Singapore topped the league table, followed by Hong Kong in second place and Russia coming in third.

How is Russia third? And down from second no less.

Is the Russian education system that good?

  2. It also shows the value of stability in policy. Phonics was pushed by Labour in 2007 following the Rose Review and then pushed harder by Nick Gibb from 2010. Consistency!

  3. Finland, Poland, Sweden and Bulgaria all down from 2016 eh? Wonder what happened in that year? Is English being considered to be less important in those countries?

If the trend continues like that then it’ll be a major loss in soft-power for the UK.

  4. We are up to 4th globally. That’s a bit better than “scores well”. The cynic in me says you wanted the karma but not to give the conservatives any credit 😂
