How accommodating refugees has become a lucrative business for hotels

  1. Yes, we’re all aware that private hoteliers are fleecing the taxpayer and this is being facilitated by government officials.

In a well run country, Roderic O Gorman would have been forced to resign months ago for his gross incompetence.

  2. How?

    Easy:

fixed long term occupancy, less cleaning, less menu options, less staff.

Hardly needs a Times article to explain it.

  3. All about that sweet, sweet monies.

Sadly mistreating people as they go.

*”But sure have you seen GDP and growth wow !”*

    Gowl bags.

  4. I know for a fact how easy it is to turn almost any building into one of these accommodation centres then get 130 per person per night. There’s fire regulations and not much else.

I’m currently renovating a place specifically for this, it’s in a posh part of Dublin and the locals haven’t got a clue that 40+ will be moving in soon. Its not my building I’m just doing work there.

From what information I’ve been told the owner has a choice between Ukrainian refugees or else asylum seekers.

Its absolutely one big cash grab

  5. Any transparency on how much these hotels are getting paid? Is there a plan by our government beyond this “short term” solution?

  6. Worked in a hotel for a few months coming up to Christmas. The hotel was creaming 84k a month from 67 refugees. They got breakfast, Lunch ajd Dinner plus rooms, heating laundry. Hotels are creaming it alright

  7. Big hotel owner I know. Just accommodated Ukrainians 5-6 per room. No need of housekeeping, no need of chefs, no need of any staff, no need of bookings, events, nothing. He is ready to retire from this probably. Ukrainians even did everything, cooked for themselves, cleaned for themselves etc… But I agree, if government or someone offers, take. If they ask, run. Good for him.

  8. Why doesn’t the government build high quality refugee centers in suitable locations?

It’s beyond crazy at this stage. You can definitely tell it’s not their money they’re spending.

  9. Don’t ask me how I know, but a hotel or two in the cork area, increases there’s prices every few months for the lads in direct provision AND in emergency accommodation. Business gonna business and capitalism will bareback us all.

Edit: just to say that I’m in employment that’s HSE funded and needed, so thank you all

  10. Is this a secret? A certain Noel C. Duggan in Millstreet, Kenmare and Waterford has been doing this for years, even decades with asylum seekers from Africa and now with Ukrainians in the Green Glens arena. He’s made millions off of it from the government. If you have the means and the land the government will give you money for this service.

  11. Thr onky thing surprising to me was fitting 6 in a room evej in a “hotel ‘ and that they are renting out private houses now and getting paid their ‘hotel’ rates for IPAS.

BTW lots of peope on this sub said refugees weren’t going to affect accommodation availability…that’s simply not true.

  12. In rural Ireland farmers farm cattle

and in Dublin its foreigners that are farmed.

Nice job, Dublin. Nice little earner, keep ’em comin’

  13. Visited Tokyo, one of the most expensive cities to rent in. Really nice hotel was 80eur a night. Probably because there are no refugees.
