It’s not exactly telling a joke to your closest friends and family.
Had to look up what he said:
>The queen’s sceptre and rod are brought from the altar
>The queen touches them in turn
>Sounds like the script to a good night out, tbh
Like, funny, but time and a place and all that.
I love the line in the article that says “Taoiseach Leo Varadkar did not add to the Irish delegations dignity, by being seen picking his nose”
If I didn’t know any better I would say this is a plot line from the thick of it. Malcolm tucker lambasting his cabinet members for not only unceremoniously get caught making jokes during a coronation, but what makes him madder than anything else, was that one of them was caught on tele picking their nose
Can someone please remind me why this matters?
Who cares?
I couldn’t give 2 shits about a few jokes he made about the coronation, the whole thing was a joke
Of course. He just sent it to a group of 350 people. That’s like an intimate group of close friends huddled around a small table in a pub whispering.
Why are so many people West Brits.
> Costelloe urged Barrett to apologise and said Varadkar should have told his partner to turn off his phone. The British now had material to say the Irish did not know how to behave in such circumstances, he said.
For the love of Christ, could we stop giving such a shit what people in the UK think about us.
But they did become public so .. here we are.
Paul Costello’s “what will the neighbours think” pearl clutching is the most embarrassing aspect about the whole episode.
He is old enough to know that you shouldn’t send anything to 350 people if you want to keep it private. What planet does he think he is on? Schoolchildren have more sense than that.
I find the idea of a monarchy a load of nonsense being honest. However he accepted the invite, even as a plus 1, so as a guest he should have shown a bit more respect than that.
If he was a random lad making those comments it would be fine imo, but as a guest he was a bit immature.
I’m no fan of the English but this guy is a muppet
Never really knew much about Barrett beyond the odd pic with Leo and unsanitary meal prep. But his giddy remarks even in his “private” group really make him come off as puerile and unlikable. That’s it really though, it’s not a newsworthy story. He’s a bit of a dope, just like his fella.
Yes and Charles Manson never intended to get caught but there yeh are now
I think they just need to just fuck right off. Im no fan of varadkar but the brits cant expect us to put their monarchy bullshit ahead of more important things like the eurovision, taking a shite and having a laugh.
I think we found the answer to what r/Ireland hates the most.
Leo beats the Brits.
A straight up apology and admission of wrong-doing. Wow. It took the fucking royals to pull that out of him though.
I’ve never liked him. Actually think he has the worst traits of any person. I despise him. He doesn’t care about people in general, it’s all about him and his career. He can’t even choose a partner that doesn’t drag us into strife. They are an odious couple. He’s built a career on being able to string a sentence together competently. The knives will be out for him soon enough, too much drama with him.
Good on him. Neither himself or Leo should have been at that load of pox
Whether you are pro or anti monarchy and pro or anti Varadkar, they were there as representatives of the state and should have respected the coronation even if it was totally ridiculous.
Leo is in danger of becoming the Irish Boris Johnson 😂
The ‘Clerk of the Closet’ joke was funny enough tbf.
There is a saying as Gaeilge.
Ní scéal rúin a chuala triúr. It isn’t a secret if three know.
But 150…. Ah here.
I’ve had enough of this guy back when he “admitted” that Ireland is 40% more expensive to live in than rest of Europe. If I wanted a clown I’d go to the circus
Say what you like to your mates down the pub, but posting your ‘witty’ remarks on social media as a guest at a state occasion is such a 15 year old trying to be a snark move. A great example of someone who has a lot of education but very little cop-on. Such a twit.
It’s Social Media. The clue is in the name!
Would be epic if he got done under the new hate speech laws
This is fucking bullshit. So what if he sent some flippant message.
What a delightfully well matched couple. It appears Barrett is a smarmy little bollix, too.
Referring to your boyfriend as a partner makes it sound like a business deal of some sort .
Just shows you can learn medicine but be thick as shit.
Sounds like a right tool
Ha. Barrett for President. Live tweeting the swearing in would be hilarious.
Was he filmed picking his nose AGAIN?
A good point made here:
>*Some commentators said Varadkar, who caused a flap in March by* *joking* *about Bill Clinton’s affair with Monica Lewinsky, had not added to the Irish delegation’s dignity by being filmed picking his nose.*
>
>*“Their morning went from Hankiegate to Instagate,” said the Irish Times columnist Miriam Lord. Barrett’s interventions undercut the attempt to apply post-Brexit balm to diplomatic relations, she said. “Strange behaviour from someone who is there as the guest of the person representing* *Ireland* *at this important state occasion and whose presence is seen as a symbolic gesture marking this state’s improved relationship with Britain.”*
The GRYFFINDOR bit got me, so my verdict is not guilty.
The pair of them are awful eejits
Absolutely despise Leo, but the focus on Barrett of late is in my view exceedingly unreasonable. Are people now to be held in some way responsible for their partners’ behaviour? If that was the case, I and many others would have egg *all* over our faces entirely not of our own making. What Barrett said may or may not have been appalling (I honestly haven’t read the quote and I really have no instinct to given how utterly bored I am of anything to do with the British royal family in the news) but the fact is that he’s not a public representative and is not accountable to the people in any way.
Like, worst case scenario here you could I suppose claim that Leo has questionable taste in partners. Who cares? Haven’t we all dated others who have, at some point, done something we found absolutely mortifying?
It seems like such a non-story.
Revenge for Leo’s cheating?

Oh come on… How could you not take the piss?!
Gerry Adams would be proud. I doubt he could have orchestrated insult after mocking insult as much as those two clowns.
Leo picking his nose and wiping it in God knows how many sleeves/other hands.
Then Twat Barrett making as much a mockery as he is capable of the Coronation himself.
Leo’s defence that it was just to friends, doesn’t really amount to much, especially not when his phone was supposed to be off anyway.
