New German citizenship laws to be voted on this summer

  1. Looks like the current government’s changes to the immigration laws is making it’s way through the process. Highlights from the article:

    * Reducing the residency requirement to 5 years from 8 to apply for citizenship.
    * Children with parents who have lived in Germany 5 years can be granted citizenship.
    * Dual citizenship will be allowed for non-EU citizens.

It seems the FDP was holding things up, but they agreed on some amendments. Certain crimes (such as “proven cases of antisemitic, racist, xenophobic or inhuman acts”) exclude applicants from citizenship, as well as polygamous marriage or rejecting gender equality.

There’s still some work to be done: “The draft will be reviewed by federal and state governments on Friday and is expected to face votes in the Bundestag and Bundesrat during the summer.”
