I genuinely wonder what life would be like had Harold Godwinson won the battle. Would England have been so important? Would England have been as strong? Would England have been so imperial? It’s arguable that many of these pursuits come down to who was in charge and the people in charge were all Normans — even today, most landed gentry can trace their heritage back to the Norman elites installed by William I.
Speaking as an expert who has played, and lost, the Battle of Hastings on Total War many times, I still don’t understand how the Normans won.
I went to the [950th Anniversary](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khSfyb2omjo) re-enactment. They put on a good show though a bit too much sports commentary every 5 seconds.
In a [youtube short](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UXr8dOjZkho) I did to celebrate the occasion you can hear people booing when they announce William’s victory. It’s interesting that despite years of 1066 “being a good thing” more people these days have a hard time seeing it that way.
Interesting how the painted it like as if it had taken place in their own times.
If William had lost, the english we speak would be a lot closer to Dutch/Frisian.
We did this in school and all I can remember is that someone got an arrow in the eye.

Hey I did a video about the Norman conquest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FrIE2I2mlfk
Worst day in English history. Turned back democracy by a few centuries.
[People with Norman names were on average 10% richer than the average Brit in **2011**](https://www.theguardian.com/society/2011/apr/03/social-mobility-britain-aristocracy)
Ugh. Not to judge the event but that is one horrible painting 🙁
The painting seems to depict if as if it was ~~high~~ Late Middle Ages, if you look at their armors
Battle of Stamford bridge . end off the Vikings. Marcus back down battle of Hastings . nothing more to say
Which is why we call dead animals we eat by different names. Beef, pork, mutton, venison, veel.
I would like a rematch please
Colonizers being colonized.
This is why beef is called beef when it is dead and processed but cattle when it’s alive.
A visit to the [battlefield](https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/1066-battle-of-hastings-abbey-and-battlefield/) is well worth a visit if you like your early medieval history and you’re in the area.
It’s one of the few you can walk around and see untouched. It’s quite poignant knowing what happened there centuries before.
I’ve also mentioned this before, but [“The Last English King” by Julian Rathbone](https://www.amazon.co.uk/Last-English-King-Julian-Rathbone/dp/0349109435) is an excellent historical novel based around the battle.
