From 1,5 to 1,2 per mille: you can lose your license quicker if you had a bit to drink before driving

  1. The fact you can still drink and drive in Belgium is beyond me, just make it a 0% tolerance and remove the ‘what if’ calculations we go through when drinking and driving. If you drive, you don’t drink, it’s really not so hard.

  2. 1.2‰ is not “a bit”, that’s like 6 beers in an hour…

Personally, I think anybody with over 0.1‰ should lose their license, but good luck to amy politician to suggest that…

  3. It’s beyond me that there are still people out there who just get behind the wheel actually drunk thinking it’ll be okay.

  4. Just don’t drink if you’re the driver. It’s not that hard.

If you swear to always be 0 promille. You should get a discount on your car insurance.

So when you get stopped, they’ll check if you went with the plan to be evaluated on 0 promille and fine you respectively

  5. For anyone who doesn’t get why this isn’t enough, or thinks this is too strict: a male of 90 kilograms drinking 3 beers in rapid succession usually only sits at 0.6. That’s half. Even at 6, most alcohol calculators would tell you you’re only at 1.04.

Imagine downing 6 beers within the hour and thinking you can drive.

If you genuinely think this is too strict, you are a menace.

  6. I’m all for a zero tolerance policy. You should never drink and drive. Want to drink anyway? Call a cab or have someone drive you. There’s literally no reason you should drink and drive, ever.

  7. with the previous rule, i had in mind you could only drink 1 beer per hour (impossible to hold). it made me so nervous..
now i dont drink at all anymore but id advocate that for many the social pressure to drink is not easy to manage. that and the fact we have an alcoholic culture, theres alcohol on every occasion and any place you go. good for those who can abstain, for me it was impossible to resist, the only way was to get clean. its remains a constant struggle 2.5 years after stopping.

i remember a great discussion on reddit, where even police officers where taking part. the goal of these laws is not to punish people blindly, its to ensure nobody drives a vehicle when they in a state they’re not reliable. that applies also to old people, ppl under medication, in nervous breakdown or any other conditions. drink coffee like crazy and you’re as dangerous that someone under amphetamines.

a regular drinker or weed smoker have high tolerance and are probably able to handle a few drinks/joints, where an abstinent person is totally unable after only one. the discussion was saying that the police should rather test the peoples reflexes in cases of emergency, than relying on tests that are often debatable. for instance with a videogame-like simulator. i think its a very good approach

  8. What about 0 tolerance? I’m sick off people getting behind the wheel drunk because they think they’re still within the limits, with a 0 tolerance there is no discussion.

  9. it’s absolutely ridiculous that it’s legal to drive around being a little drunk/intoxicated. There is zero tolerance for other drugs, so why this exception?

  10. Even if one were to set the limit at zero, as long as the chance of being caught remains small, people will continue to drink and drive.

  11. >En ook om de strijd tegen recidivisme verder op te voeren. “Respectloze wegpiraten kunnen we niet tolereren”, aldus Gilkinet.

If only there was some system where recidivists could be handled through, maybe something points based?

  12. I just get a cab when I plan to get shitfaced. Not actually that expensive from where I live to Leuven centrum. I do wish we had more public transport options during the night though, if I’m going out in Brussels, I have to book a hotel as well, sadly can’t take a train after midnight.

  13. For me they can take it away from 0.75. I have never heard a valid excuse for driving while drinking more than 4 beers.

  14. According to the 2018 “E-Survey of Road users’ Attitudes” (ESRA2), one third of car drivers in Belgium (33.1%) reported that they had driven after having drunk alcohol at least once during the past 30 days.

But we are trained from a young age to deal with it with the auto-tamponneuse /s
