Why are so many young Americans adopting fake British accents?

  1. Because Americans are just so insecure about their own origins. Do you, for example hear nationalities such as Italian-British, or African-British in the UK?

  2. This made me laugh.

But – British kids have been putting on American accents for years.

I remember when I was at school people did this, my mother blamed it on sky tv.

  3. Americans are so obsessed with race and geneology.

“Oh sorry im late im 1/8th irish”

“Hey come on im italian im passionate!”

And the term african american is absolutely absurdly racist. You going to assume everyone black is from africa?! Or everyone in africa is black?!

  4. No one remember neighbours coming on TV? British kids had Aussie accents for ages. And the infliction at the end of every sentence so it sounded like a question.

  5. God yeah, there’s this one streamer I used to watch, he’d insist “that was just the way he talked” but you could tell it was an affectation because it wasn’t even that good of an impression.

  6. I mean every kid in the country has started speaking with a london accent in the last few years.

Its bizarre to hear kids on the coast or from the north speaking MLE.

    Its not much better tbh

  7. Oi Joe Biden I’m Bri’ish I am me and me wive go down to the pub for a jolly ol’ pint we are

(Idk I guess that’s how Brits talk. I’m Dutch I would not know)

  8. They are spectacularly bad at them though – apparently we all talk like “allo mate ave yoo got a loicence for dat.” I don’t even know what accent that is?

  9. Probably seeing the convergence of the Anglospheric culture group on one or fewer accents, i’ve certainly heard young Brits adopting Americanisms and something approaching a more americanised accent.

Might be the return of the mid-atlantic accent in a big way.

  10. Is that actually what “doing bits” means? I always assumed it was just doing something well or something having gone well. Am I out of touch or is the Guardian?

  11. Maybe Mary Poppins has recently been shown on a US TV station and Americans are want to talk like Dick van Dyke and no mistake

  12. Isn’t it because Peppa Pig became super popular? I have nieces and nephews on both sides of the pond and the kiddos in the US obsessed with Peppa started sounding more like British while the kiddos here sounded more American when they picked up on US cartoons.

  13. I traveled around the US for a bit and a good few people thought my English accent was fake. Turns out a lot of blokes do it to pick up women.

  14. I have lived in England for 20 years and still sound American.

The only time it changes is when I am tired (I sound like I am from Leeds) or in Ireland or Scotland.

  15. To escape sexual assault charges by creating a new identity in Glasgow, until discovered from being admitted to hospital with Covid

  16. Good job hardly any of them can do it convincingly. It’s as cringeworthy as hearing English try Scottish accents.

  17. I lived over there for about 20 years and have 3 teenage kids. They have American accents but will have a British twang when using British sayings or terms. The area I live in has a pretty large expat community, so they hang out with other kids with at least one British parent. It’s always amusing at social events when we are all together hearing a bunch of American kids using terms like Oi mate.

I worked in higher education for a number of years over there and would interact with college students on a daily basis. I would constantly have them come up to me ask if I would like to hear their British accent. Despite me giving them a strange look and declining, they would always start doing it. 99% of the time they sounded like a stroke patient but they were convinced it was perfect Queens English. I always thought that it was ironic that if I was to do the same to someone’s face who was from a different culture or country, I’d be called racist and would be guaranteed to lose my job.

  18. My feeling on this, is it’s a shit article. Probably three or four people on tiktok said this, it got into a “journalists” feed and they wrote an article about it, cherry picking some anecdotes. I’m sure people do it, in the same way people do lots of dumb shit for tiktok, for the views
