Should nightclubs be allowed to open until 6am?

  1. I get that it is headline grabbing, and in fairness both sides there recognise it, but the reforms go a lot further than merely allowing clubs to open until 6am.

Of course there’s no love lost between Sharpe and the pubs. I do hope we see a bit of a diversity in offerings off the back of them reforms. I can see AAI’s concerns, and they’re probably right in that allowing more places to sell alcohol will increase consumption (I can’t see it decreasing it anyway), but I think it’ll still be a good thing for our cities and for socialising here.

Quite like the little editors notes about the facts and figures too, that’s a nice insert.

  2. Yes. I live in a city with no closing times. People leave the clubs at different times so you never see the carnage that happens in Ireland.

  3. What difference does it make to you? If you wanna stay till six stay if you wanna go home earlier go 🤷‍♂️

  4. Yes.

And FFS do away with not being able to buy booze in the shops before 10:30, or 12:00 on a sunday.

Bloody ridiculous that if you’re in shopping early, you can’t throw in a few cans or a bottle of wine, or whatever

  5. Let them stay open 24hr if they want, but get tough on alcohol fuelled violence and public intoxication. In other words let people be adults but make sure they take responsibility for their actions.

  6. Would be handy to have somewhere to stay until public transport starts up again, then won’t need to fork out 50eu for the taxi

  7. It should be allowed, yes. Businesses ( and their staff, as in do they wanna work there) can then decide if it’s a good fit for them

  8. It’d be amazing, especially if you’re heading out on a Friday night. I’d love to be able to nap until like 8/9pm after work and then head to prinks or something around 11ish and then onto a club whenever I wanted.

  9. Click bait aside, there’s a good interview with Sunil Sharpe there that I’d encourage anyone here interested in the topic to read

  10. Absolutely they should. They are in lots of other countries. I’m sick of living I’m a country run by geriatrics. Open the clubs, remove alcohol sale times, decriminalise drugs, let us actually have some fun and stop treating us like children

  11. Makes no difference to me in my dryshite old age, but if other people want want to stay in a club until fuck knows when, more power to them.

  12. Yes . It would lessen the mayhem when everyone is thrown out at once. Less fights. More taxis. And for a more niche benefit ,longer DJ sets for those who enjoy them. No brainer

  13. Yes. I’m too old for that kind of lark now but 25 years ago I would have loved to be able to stay out as long as I wanted and not get yeeted out onto the street at 2:30am. It’s bonkers that we don’t support a late night culture here except for brutal places like copper’s.

  14. What a healthy engagement between Sheila and Sunil.
I have met Sunil a good few times and he’s a gent. He is one of the most skilful DJs using turntables on earth, no joke. He plays around Europe very frequently and there’s no doubt the experiences over the years in other countries has given him valuable insight into what we need to do here to improve nightlife.
He also teaches DJing in Bray at least part time also. Many would have given up battling this issue long before this point. He kept going and he deserves a lot of respect for that.

  15. I love the comments sections where folks who don’t go to nightclubs complain about laws relating to nightclubs. Every other European country has a night sector, entertainers, musicians who can earn a living and we’re like the hobby section where everyone has a day job to support the few measly hours they can get at night.
