Ireland mulls joining Nato subsea group after Russian boat activity

  1. One of NATO’s membership is — “They must be working toward compatibility with NATO forces.”

Does anyone know precisely what that means?

  2. Although I’m not 100% sold on joining NATO, I think there needs to be a serious discussion about defence in this country. We need to at a minimum have the capability to police our own seas and skies without having to rely on formal or informal cooperation from the British. At a minimum we should at least not kid ourselves saying we are neutral when we have seemingly semi formal arrangements with Britain for our defence.

  3. Just speculating, but I’d imagine it went something like “If you’re not capable of protecting your seas, we’ll do it for you. Sign here.”

Embarrassment all round I’d say, freeloading on everyone else.

  4. I would be happy if we took our defense service seriously. Tankie fuckers always seem to miss that passivism and neutrality isn’t just sitting on the sidelines and doing nothing. We should be able to defend our neutrality and help those in need.

    Switzerland model.

  5. So we invest in our armed forces to be able to defend our borders/sovereignty and establish armed neutrality like Switzerland. Is that easy but the government keeps under investing in military it seems hoping that NATO becomes our defacto protectors even more and then we join NATO

  6. We shouldn’t join NATO we should continue our neutrality. However continuing out neutrality means being able to do stuff to defend ourselves. We don’t need a huge military cause we’d never be able to compete with other countries in terms of manpower and scale no matter how much we put in. What we need is a very very well trained well equipped relatively small force that has a wide range of capabilities. We need to be able to police our territory, and we need to be able to conduct special operations globally, cause the chances of something happening abroad that Ireland could need to intervene in is much higher than Ireland getting invaded

  7. Properly fund the navy for patrols, with a few more ships as our EEZ is massive, with mil-grade primary radar so we can at the very least track aircraft that don’t want to be seen. I’d love to see us purchase some fast jets but I’m doubtful that would happen any time soon. Don’t see the need to increase the size of the army tbh but perhaps a higher standard of training akin to US army rangers level (with better pay and conditions). Add in a few transport aircraft too. It will cost a lot though to get all this and I doubt there is a will to do it.

  8. The article is not about joining NATO it’s about a new group the NATO has launched and its about under sea infrastructure, ie cables and pipes
