Greek parliamentary Election (90%) results

  1. Triumph for incumbent New Democracy, they actually got a higher percentage than 2019 and saw SYRIZA getting decimated.

SYRIZA tried to make the election about a dilemma of “progressive government with other left of center parties” vs “ND government” which was suicidal, given that Greeks always vote based on the economy and ND did better in the economy than SYRIZA.

Then SYRIZA politicians sayed a lot of baffling stuff the last 2 weeks like “we will tax 20% all freelancers” (great way to lose apolitical and centrist votes) and “we want ex-Golden Dawn members to vote for us” (great way to lose leftists) and were completely out of touch with reality claiming that “the polls are controlled by the New Democracy, we are leading” (the polls were showing them losing by 7-8% and they lost by 20%).

PASOK bounced back a bit but is still super weak in Athens, they were 4th behind KKE there. They need to find a narrative to get the urban progressives from SYRIZA in Athens if they want to become a big party again. Athens Metro is 40% of Greece.

KKE saw their percentage rise slightly, getting leftist protest votes from SYRIZA. The party is hardline communist and does not co-operate with anyone.

EL held their ground unfortunately, the Macedonia region has an increasingly high percentage of conspiracy theorist, pro-Russia and pro-Orthodox church voters.

Disaster for Mera25, Varoufakis had a pre-election campaign dominated by his idea about a parallel payment system which was not that popular in the end, and lost a lot of the youth vote to Plefsi Eleftherias (Course for Freedom), a left wing nationalist (?) vote around the cult of personality of Zoe Konstantopoulou, former Speaker of the Parliament with SYRIZA in the 1st half of 2015.

Niki is like EL: pro-Putin, pro-conspiracy theories, pro-religion etc. Like EL, they got their percentages in Macedonia.

Niki and PE won’t make the Parliament, barely.

There will be new elections in July, since New Democracy just need the same result with the new electoral law to get an absolute majority, they have already said this will happen.

Worth noting that ND won ALL prefectures of Greece except Rodopi (where SYRIZA and PASOK have a Muslim minority candidate each and have a very predictable percentage). First ever win for ND in Heraklion, first in Achaea since 1977.

  2. In my humble opinion, the political left screwed up so badly to present an alternative to a government program, that those at the center moved to the right wing party of Nea Dimokratia.

  3. SYRIZA since 2015 tried to be a “friendlier face” while having the same policies as everyone else, even after promising significant change.

It now stopped trying to go against ND’s, often insane, stances, opting to show themselves as “better Neoliberals” (without calling it that), as the UK’s Labour once did.

They payed for that dearly, as did the whole world. There is a good chance Brexit and Trump wouldn’t be a thing without the domino effect after SYRIZA’s 2015 U-turn.
