I’m not going to the Shein pop-up in Cork, and here’s why you shouldn’t either

  1. Literally the only good thing about shein is the try on vids 👀 Otherwise it’s a disaster, plenty of other trash brands obviously.

  2. But isn’t Simon planning an extension on the summer gaff in Crosshaven? It’s not all about Gretta 🙄

    /s

  3. Muh, the City Center is dying!

    Ok let’s open a pop up store…

Oh no, that’s not what we want!

  4. Wouldn’t shop there anyway but most people are hypocrites when it comes to this. At least half the items you own come from cheap chinese labour.

  5. I bought some stuff from them recently for the first time. The track suit pants bobbled to fuck on the first wash and the socks were like ladies tights, they were so flimsy I could see my feet through them. Awful shite, never again. Only bought as Pennys mens socks have gone to shite this last couple of years, I’d much prefer a price increase than a huge drop in quality but that’s the path they’ve chosen

  6. Had it out with a Filipino friend of mine who loves Shein the other day (it’s big over there), she said she has one bikini per day for a holiday and never posts in the same outfit on Insta. I told her this is why I have Carbon Tax. Not sure we’re still friends.
Edit-for all the downvotes, her lack of freckles plus her positive world view was confusing anyway, it’d never have worked x

  7. I think blaming consumers for business practices lets the people who are actually responsible off the hook.

In every case, there are people who have set up these businesses, organised suppliers and labour practices, and it is them, not consumers, who should face criticism for unethical practices. That is where the finger should be pointed.

  8. 5 nobodies in the photo, only 4 get namechecked under article photo, who is the unlucky nobody? hashtag something or another.

  9. I mean most shit you buy is from slave labour in China or India somewhere but I’m surprised how popular Shein is. It’s absolute muck. Bought 3 shirts there and the quality was deplorable. Immediately threw them out.

  10. If you ever actually compare most fashionable clothing outside of basic clothes, Shein is dramatically more expensive than even specialist clothing.

I’ve seen shein clothes selling for double the price of equivalent clothing on boutique auction sites.

Now, pray tell, why in the flying fuck would someone pay twice that of boutique prices, for a absolute lowest of quality clothing which won’t last more than a year.

  11. It’s slave labour and shit quality and it’s single use outfits. It’s the combination.

Yes most electronics have awful supply chains, but they work and they don’t get replaced every week and go straight to landfills.

So bad things are actually worse than other bad things.

  12. Stuff like this always comes across as extremely classist.

River Island right next door probably source their items from the same factory, but receive less scrutiny as they sell at a premium price to a middle class consumer.

Shein sells to the “povos” and this is why it’s bad.

  13. The most important reason for not going to shops like that is their impact on global warming. The fashion and clothing industry contributes as much or more CO2 to the atmosphere as all the airlines put together. Cheap clothes that people effectively treat as disposable are part of the problem.

  14. I don’t see why not. Like 90% of irish people shop in pennys and the way that stuff is made is the exact same. Nearly everything is made in China. The difference between shein and pennys in this situation is when the shein popup is done, they’re gonna donate everything left in the store to SVP. It does count for something even if it originated in shit

  15. I have really bad news for the author of this article about their smartphone and likely also the laptop they wrote the article on.
