On a recent trip to Stavanger from USA we saw a number of these unusual (to us) trees all over town. Does anyone know what they are, and whether they are native to Scandinavia or introduced?
I’ve wondered this too. Must be the most labour-intensive trees that the kommune has. Every 3 years, crews drive around trimming them to make them look like Tim Burton scary halloween trees. They look nice when allowed to grow out, but otherwise? Cactuses.

It is a regular Norway maple.
We just cut trees this way, so they don’t grow too big.
