  1. fun fact Lappeenranta is also known as the Monaco of Finland

also the swedish name of Lappeenranta Villmanstrand means wild mans strand

  2. Sadly the city’s ruined these days buy airport & Russian tourist obsessed city council and a rubber stamp for construction companies city architects.

  3. Been there many times to visit the university, lovely in the summer, lots of Russian tourists and shoppers

Now probably a bit dead due to the Russian visa ban, sad

  4. Many thanks for posting this. Been there multiple times and the city is very dear to my heart. I wouldn’t necessarily call it a “small city”, though, at least not by Finnish standards. Of course it doesn’t hold a candle to Tokyo, New York, Sao Paolo or Mumbai, but so does even Helsinki and afaik, Lappeenranta just barely misses on being among the 10 largest cities in whole Finland. But again, only nitpicking here – wonderful pics, thx!

  5. As a Canadian born the last year of the 20th century, I recently (like the past year) thought about *what was it like for towns along the boarder of the Soviet Union*? Would those free towns hear music and or USSR propaganda from the near by places that within the Soviet Union’s boarders?
