I got offered an internship at Airbus’s Manching/Ottobrun Munich faculty for “Federated Machine Learning”. You can see more about it here: [https://airbus.talentify.io/job/internship-dfm-within-federated-machine-learning-manching-bavaria-airbus-jr10187391](https://airbus.talentify.io/job/internship-dfm-within-federated-machine-learning-manching-bavaria-airbus-jr10187391)

What should I expect and negotiate in terms of monthly salary? Does 3500 euros seem reasonable? It seems to be a very good and exclusive internship and the job description specifies that it comes with an “attractive salary”.

  1. Many of these large corporations pay according to a Tarifvertrag, where your salary depends on things like your university degree, whether it is a mandatory or voluntary internship and maybe some other things.

You should simply ask for the salary and you might fail to negotiate.

  2. Airbus is a big company with an internship program and Werkstudenten Programm, the big companies I had internships with, had fixed salaries based on your highest degree, nothing to negotiate there. Maybe Airbus handles things differently though.

  3. When I did a mandatory internship there during my studies I got paid 1000€ per month, which was neat because mandatory internships don’t need to be paid at all.

For voluntary internships they have to pay at least minimum wage, but I have never heard of a salary negotiation for an internship before.

Perhaps you are working with a different understanding of what an internship entails? I lived for some time in Brazil, and there an internship usually lasted 1+ year and was basically the first step in someone’s career, so these internships usually included decent salaries, corporate benefits, etc. I don’t know where you are from, but maybe you expect the same. In Germany, internships usually last a few months at most and are more designed towards letting students get a feel for what it’s liking working in a specific professional environment.
