“Déi” is usually used before an adjective in this context. Like “déi gréng”, green is a colour so you can’t use d’ or de on its own. “Déi” is also used to talk about something or someone specific. Like a person walking by. So yeah, it is really similar to “that” or “this”. “This person” would translate to “déi persoun” whereas “d’persoun” would simply be “the person”.
For “déi bescht qualitéit” it’s simply a style choice. It would also work with a d’ as an article, but with using déi they really want to say that it’s THE best quality.
Hope that helps!

‘D’bescht Qualitéit’ is also awkward to say – ‘déi’ avoids the “d/b” sound – I’m pretty sure I’d say ‘déi’ instinctively. (So a bit like the ‘a’ that sometimes is ‘an’ in English because, for example, ‘a apple’ is just awkward to say.)
u/OP: for spelling: I’m about mid-fourty : we did not have official lessons in Luxembourgish except for one lesson per week for one year. We mostly learnt to read it, not really write it. And yes, orthography was adapted during my lifetime, but I’m pretty sure the major stuff was already settled before I was born.

Fascinating that you only learned it for 1 year

Imo, the invention of text messaging was the a big help to get more written in Luxembourgish again. Before those came about, I pretty much never had the need or urge to write Luxembourgish. (And the advent of emails, social networks, messenger apps, and so on only made me write even more in Luxembourgish …)

You make it seem like “d’bescht Qualitéit” would also be a possibility of saying it. When in reality nobody would say it like that. So it isn’t really a style choice. It just means “the best quality”

The same word takes different grammatical roles, so it depends. Check this: [https://lod.lu/sich/lb/déi](https://lod.lu/sich/lb/d%C3%A9i)

Mods can’t “undelete” something to appear “normal”?
There should be an auto ban for people who delete their posts. It’s selfish, like taking what information you need and then basically telling everyone else to eff off.
It’s also rude to everyone else who volunteered to answer the question.
déi do ass gudd!
Its like the german der / die / das / den
So basically an fancy “the”
Like Dei Greng (Partei) would be “the green (party)” except its a matter also of local styling.
Germany has “ Die Grünen” / “the Greens” (sounds a bit weird in english to me but eh)
Furthermore, i often also read “ di bescht qualiteit” which would be sorta german “die beste qualität”
