Omicron is totally Godzilla, turns up and trashes the place but kills a massive radioactive octopus in the process
No doubt now the goalpost will shift, again, everybody being scared of a further mutation to something super severe – just like we’re scared of the common cold doing every year…
But infections will exponentially rise to 1 million a day…
Cases will likely soon plateua. This will soon be over
So isn’t omicron our friend? More people get it with minimal symptoms, leading to more immunity, leading to less cases (eventually), leading to less chance of another variant developing.
SAGE worst case scenarios not coming true & devolved nations making pointless measures to be different. Seems like summer again.
Sunak, mogg and co can be massive wankers, but credit where its due they resisted locking down.
I find the fact people don’t get simple maths and the hospital crisis bewildering.
If it carries on growing at this rate that’s still a hell of a lot of beds to pull out of our arse.
Yep, no further restrictions needed, people can try a bit of personal responsibility and autonomy, scary for some I know 😉
Be interesting to see a rough infection to hospitalisation ratio for both Delta and Omicron. Being up to 70% less likely to hospitalise loses its effect if it’s infecting 500% more people.
lol boster is pointless after 10 weeks? I got my 2, no more thanks im not your guinea pig.
Yeah, we know. The South African Scientists told us this from the very start. Just the Lock-Down Enthusiasts were just itching to take away our liberties, again.
The news is stating that hospitals are at full capacity.
Yeah no shit, every day for the past 2 weeks there has been more and more data from all over the world confirming the same thing.
Omicron is less dangerous to the individual, but there are concerns over a flooding of the system with how many cases there are.
So why has the conversation been fixated on restrictions and scaremongering, instead of increasing our healthcare capacity to deal with the extra cases?
Booster starts to wane at 10 weeks. That’s pretty concerning.
Seems like it’s mutating to be weaker. It’ll be interesting to see if this continues.
But as it’s so more transmissible it’s possible you could still have more hospitalisations and deaths even though it’s ‘milder’.
There is also the caveat that it’s initially been spreading in healthier younger people – what will it do when it gets into care homes etc…
Its getting stupid with the statistics now. Terrible.
Should be the chances of requiring hospital care are 1 in xxxxxx, also the gov site with vaccinations ages 12+ is stupid. There should be age related data.
Also that John Campbell guy….NOT A REAL DOCTOR.
Can’t the BBC get some real covid news , why do I need to look at twitter and reddit for 1/2 decent info?
So a third of the hospitalisation? But is it not like 4 times more transmissible? So it essentially doesn’t matter that it’s so mild?
Is this in relation to vaccinated people or are we still losing our heads protecting people who won’t protect themselves?
And yet there will almost certainly be a lockdown anyway. Whitty seems desperate for one.
Pretty much sure I said a few weeks back that Omincron is only got a 40% chance of putting someone in hospital but this sub decided to give me hell. Sorry I were slightly wrong by 10% but I did say its not as bad as was making it out to be.
Even if we’re 70% less likely to experience hospitalisation with this new variant, it’s still up to 50 times more transmissable, probably more.
Let’s say out of 50,000 people infected, 700 need to be hospitalised, giving us a 1.4% hospitalisation rate.
30% of that is 0.42%, but then… if the virus is 50 times more infectious, it could potentially infect 2,500,000 in a day, and 0.42% of that is 10,500 hospitalisations in a day. This would be almost TREBLE of our previous peak of 4,583 hospital admissions in a day and would be an utter doomsday scenario for the NHS. It would take up about a third of the NHS’s hospital bed capacity in a single day.
While I don’t think we will get anywhere close to that, it’s still easy to see why the pro-lockdown crowd are shitting themselves at the prospect of exponential growth with this variant.
