How BBC’s Newsnight introduced Mairead McGuinness last night 😂

  1. Fine Gael could do a lot worse. The best thing she has going for her is that she’s never been involved in domestic politics. She’s fairly well known but since most people haven’t a clue what goes on in the EU parliament or even the commission, no one really knows about her track record.

That might seem like a downside since she can’t campaign on a great track record. But since she’s held high positions in the EU, it’ll just be generally assumed that she’s been successful.

That having been said, the presidential elections are particularly brutal. Whoever runs will have all the skeletons in their closet put on full display.

I’d rather have a president to represent Ireland that actually cares about the lives of refugees and asylum seekers.

From Direct Provision to this vote to how they’ve handled the recent intake of refugees and asylum seekers and the disgusting far right backlash to it, McGuinness and Fine Gael have shown their contempt for refugees and asylum seekers time and again.

  3. How could we go from multiple presidents that are human rights champions to someone who was happy to let children drown in the Mediterranean?

  4. Terrible during Brexit, but in terms of being a well connected figure head who would not offend half the country, yeah she could do that job.

  5. She’s a good choice candidate to run as far as Fine Gael should be concerned.

However unless something drastic changed I have a hard time seeing a candidate running under the FG banner to get the votes. But mabye im wrong.

  6. I feel like she’s the strong favourite if you vote fine Gael, read the Irish Times and don’t talk to anyone who doesn’t do the same.

She’s very boring and uninspiring. By all accounts she seems to do her job well in Brussels she should probably stay there a potential commissioner in future after Von der Leyen.

I’d be very surprised if she won the presidency. Michael D Higgins has changed the role by being so incredibly well suited to it. He’s the embodiment of what we like about Ireland the fiery poet with a social conscience.

Ideally you want someone admirable, relatable, interesting, cultured and with considerable political experience. It’ll be hard to find someone like that again.

  7. Our president doesn’t have a lot of day to day responsibilities, but I’d summarise them as:

    1. Win the next civil war if it breaks out.
    2. Speak out when the other organs of State trample on the Constitution.
    3. Don’t embarrass the country.

  8. If Zelensky can be elected president of Ukraine and become an inspirational leader of a country during wartime, why not an Irish comedian for the Aras? Tommy Tiernan? Jason Byrne maybe?

Seriously though, if Paddy Kielty does a good job with the LLS gig and is seen as a bridge between north and south, then he could be a decent shout in 9 years time, 2025 would be too soon for him.

  9. Enda will have a target on her back, guaranteed it’ll be Enda vs Bertie for the Aras with Miriam trying and failing miserably to be relevant.

  10. She’d be good, but I’d much rather her be in the EU, she has a decent shout at commission president down the line.

  11. John Creedon would be great, despite being from cork. He’s calm, collected and personable, fluent in Irish and passionate about his country. All you want is a good ambassador for Ireland rather than some career politician.

  12. I’d say she be going for Ursula Von der Leyen’s job President of the European Commission rather than President of Ireland.

  13. Compliance nerd here, she woud be mad to walk away from what she is going now. Her department are bringing some game changing regulations and finance packages that will drag the European banking system into the digital world and offer competition all across the block she has the potential for Urselas job whenever it comes up
