Got no problem with people trying to catch paedos when the police obviously fail to act. What I don’t agree with is live-streaming it, or posting it all over social media, or making profit from it. If it was truly about protecting kids then they’d just hand any evidence over to the police. Instead they risk prejudicing juries, as well as sabotaging any possible operation the police already have going on, and they can also get it wrong too leading to defamation such as what’s happened here. They seem to let the power go to their heads and see themselves as vigilante heroes. The fact that they’re profiting from it is morally wrong.

I do quite enjoy watching those nonce sting citizens arrest videos as a guilty pleasure, as I’m sure many do, given the memetic far reach of “I’m gonna lose me job” etc.
However… I do get deeply conflicted by the lengthy and aggressive interviews they subject the suspected abusers to while waiting for a constable to arrive, pretty much due to lacking one key element:

Everyone is innocent until proven guilty. If you think human rights should be conditional, you don’t believe in human rights.

The guy was totally innocent and had moved to Cornwall because it was where he wanted to live.

I remember a few years back an old school friend’s brother was caught on one of these facebook stings, the brother is severely autistic and you can tell by talking to him that even if he had been talking to someone underage, he is clearly not able to assess the consequences of his actions. So after the Police investigated they found no evidence, but it still didn’t stop his family getting a brick through the window.

He did a runner leaving he’s wife and kids to face any backlash and all the abuse, they ended up moving out the area for their own protection/sanity.
I do not agree with the hunters filming to post straight to social media, if they really wanted to help I would expect them to take all evidence to the police and let them deal with it.

I only use Facebook for DIY, arts and crafts, and interior design groups now, but for the last 3-4 days my feed has been FLOODED with videos from these clowns, to the point I blocked them this morning because they were doing my head in. What a weird coincidence.
For the record, they’re embarrassing to watch. The younger one is so obviously getting off on the power trip I’m amazed he can walk the day after he does a “sting”.
False accusations can ruin lives. People have literally been run out of their communities thanks to baseless accusations. Unfortunately having an investigation dropped doesn’t make you innocent so that’s a label that will be stuck with you in the local community.
