Belgium in top three countries where people feel the most unsafe walking at night

  1. I mean, I wouldn’t walk outside at night in Belgium, but I find it hard to believe it’s almost the worst place in Europe.

To be really fair, I encounter most creepy people on warm sunny afternoons. Never at night. But of course I am rarely outside at night and more often on warm sunny afternoons.

  2. I’m a male with long hair and a bit of an androgynous figure, so people often mistake me as a woman. Sometimes even during the day (mostly boomers making weird comments, their faces are hilarious the moment they realize I’m a dude lol).

But I’ve also literally been fucking chased at night. I don’t mind being confrontational so usually step to these people and ask what their problem is, once had a creep tell me he wanted to fuck me right there.

Pepper spray should be legalized, very fucking quick.

  3. Because people overreact.

I look like an easy target, have been into a lot of shady areas at night and never seen anything. No gangs, no public dealers, no prostitutes trying to steal my wallet, no maffia for rent, … disappointing really.

  4. Yeah, I saw this information earlier today and it is a rather dumb way to scare people. I also feel less safe in Belgium at night than, say, in Glasgow even though statistically Glasgow is way more dangerous. In some dodgy areas of Madrid I also felt safer than in West Flanders.

Why? There are always people out and about in both cities at night which makes you feel safer because the chance of you being attacked with others around is smaller. Belgium is rather dead at night which means if you do get attacked, the likelihood of you getting help is significantly smaller.

    This is how “feeling” works.

The reality is that Belgium is among the safest countries in Europe and by this definition in the world.

  5. Maybe it’s me but I never feel unsafe at night. I’m not even tall or strong, I just don’t think about it.

  6. Judging by the comments here is probably useful to separate the figures between females/males and cities/other areas.

  7. My first reaction was: can we get a breakdown per region?

I live pretty rural, and close to the Dutch border. I’ve never felt unsafe walking at night in my area, despite being a single woman. I’ve walked in extremely secluded areas at night feeling perfectly safe.

On the other hand, in some parts of Antwerp or Brussels I feel unsafe even during the daytime because of catcalls and such (I’m in my 40s and overweight, so don’t try the “you should be flattered” crap, it’s straight up harassment).

The odd thing is that I actually feel safer now the lights are out at night as an energy-saving measure here. It seems to have stopped the average drunk idiot from going out, and those caused most of the unsafe feeling. Rationally I know that real criminals won’t mind, but they probably aren’t interested in my rural area anyway. There are richer areas to burgle, more women around to harass in the cities and so on.
Most people who are out in the dark are people like me, people walking their dogs, people working in all shifts, people just needing some air after a bad day or argument. Quick nod or “evening”, no further interaction needed.

  8. Jesus, the comments on that thread in r/europe makes it sound like you’ll be brutally murdered as soon as you step foot in Belgium.

  9. I can confirm that Brussels and other bigger cities are detoriated big time the last decades. Not only from personal experiences but also things happening to relatives. We all know the reasons but we can’t mention them. You need to recognize the problems before you can take care of them.

  10. Female here, highly depends on the city and even then which part of the city.
Besides what is “feeling safe”? Is it just verbally harassment? It’s annoying but I can deal with that. Physical harassment is something different of course.

  11. Well recently I’ve started feeling unsafe walking at night because our city accepted a ton of immigrants (afghans) that have no problem following you at night.
And the fact that pepper spray is illegal…

  12. The map makes it look very bad.

Idk, I only speak about my own experience but until a few years ago, I had no issue at all going by bike to the fitness at 8 or 9 pm, a drive of 2,5km through the city centre of Kortrijk.

I had to deal with way more harassment during daytime in Menen. I had to deal with regular catcalling when I was a kid. With the border nearby, many people think they can come rob and harass people and then f*ck off to their own country without repercussions.

A breakdown per region or per city might bring some clarification.

  13. Brussel is a shithole. Antwerp is okayish but depends of the streets/area. Charleroi is hell on earth. Liège I don’t know. The rest is pretty safe and nice I would say.

  14. I lived in brussels near nord Station for 5 years, never had a problem there, in st. Catherine once I got pickpocket my phone by some criminal immigrants from France passing through, they got arrested on the spot, police in brussels is everywhere.
Now I moved in charleroi 2 weeks ago and 3 days ago 4 teenagers attempted to mug me outside the central Station, its really dark everywhere around there, I haven’t seen any police around the area. Apparently this is normal here and nobody cares, the locals just know and have adapted by avoiding going to work with public transport and everything is locked after 7!!

  15. Flanders and Wallonië feel really safe.
I’m from Mexico city, so I know how unsafe it can be at night in the city.
Brussels feels a little more dangerous at night in some places tbh.
As a man I’m alright, but my girl always gets catcalled in Molenbeck.

  16. Grew up in Hoboken in Antwerp (m) and the last 4 years I did not go around on foot anymore at night. I have been attacked multiple times without any reason and robbed.

  17. When I visit Turkey, my family members make me accompany nieces and girl cousins when they go out at night. Never was that an issue with female family members in Belgium. Not saying there is nothing going on here, just that the numbers aren’t representing the safety levels here.

  18. I’ve been to twenty five countries in Europe and most recently visited Belgium and Luxembourg so maybe my opinion is valid on this topic.

I visited Ghent, Antwerp, Brussles, Bruges, Liege and Luxembourg(a country, not a city I know).

I didn’t feel unsafe at all. There seemed to be a lot of people smoking weed in liege city centre near a market on the Sunday but I can’t say I ever felt unsafe anywhere.

  19. I’ve got followed, exposed by a male, and almost raped when I was younger. So yeah it does feel pretty unsafe to me. I’m female and regio Kempen.

  20. I came from Buenos Aires and I’m still waiting to someone to try to do me something so I have the excuse to kick their ass and stole the thief shoes in order to let him know I have more ghetto that they can realise. Walking at night it’s safe in most of the places I went and this include Brussels north as well as just a kindergarten for me
