United Ireland requires unionist consent to be viable, says expert

  1. Expert in what exactly?

Because, I think… Maybe… They should go back to school.

I would hope going forward, morally… People always consent to their nation or territory being merged with another.

But hey, maybe thats just a crazy notion I have.

  2. Surely, by definition, if a unionist consented to a united Ireland they would cease to be a unionist?

  3. Didn’t the UK start some scheme when the Hong Kong riots were going on where Hong Kong citizens could emigrate to Britain? Would the unionists push for a scheme like that for themselves or would they just campaign for a split Ireland after it’s been united?

  4. Even if there is a border poll, and that poll passes, the North will need to remain a semi autonomous entity for quite a long time, and the Republic will have to make some fundamental changes in order to merge. Its not going to be as simple as rocking up and painting the place green.

  5. Poorly worded obviously. I think the point is if there was a UI you’d need unionist acquiescence for it to function properly.

I imagine that would mean retaining a devolved power sharing government in NI

  6. Why would ya want a united Ireland the South’s a fucking joke. Have this stupid fantasy its guna be great but really it’ll jack up prices and be run by Leo and his bunch of cowboys.

Half the people in this sub probably haven’t even been up there.

  7. There’s precisely zero chance of a united Ireland in the foreseeable future. All the eejits getting upset about it on one side or another need to calm down.

  8. I’m not even that bothered about a United Ireland, but this seems close to a demand for a Unionist veto. That can go and jump.

Needless to say, a project like this needs incredibly careful planning, and should have as broad support as possible. But any suggestion of a consent requirement (aka a veto)? Nope.

  9. Unionists and their 26 county supporters the West Brits can never accept equality. It actually disintegrates their sense of self founded as that is on the fake superiority of colonialism and a hidden white supremacism.

  10. For it to realistically happen, SF would have to be stronger in the North and here. See as two people people climbing a wall with a rope holding them together. If one is slogging behind, then the other one will struggle to keep going up, however If both are strong they can both climb higher, N.I has shown last year and this year that SF is getting stronger, Now we wait for 2025 (Or unrealistically sooner) to see if here can do the same, They are theoretically strong now but don’t have power. Regardless of your views of any of the big 3 parties at the minute, If your priority is a U.I (which for most it isnt) then SF would be the party to vote for.

Edit: I would also like to add, N.I SF numbers almost feels like it is the maximum it can be at, Realistically GB would need to be weaker and here as well as the EU need to be stronger to push people who don’t identify as Unionist or Nationalist. SF align with a lot of younger people’s wants and needs at the minute and right now we’re seeing an unprecedented amount of youth turn out in elections. If you ask youth groups who they want most will say SF, Where as FFG are struggling to captivate a young vote. I personally believe their inability to captive this group will be the down fall of FFG with FG and G in particular.

  11. The replies here are so disappointing. A United Ireland to which a significant minority do not consent to being part of will be just as unhappy and unsettled as the Northern Ireland to which a significant minority did not consent to being part of.
Drop the ‘taste of their own medicine’ craic lads or the UI will not happen
