Vaccines are a total mess. Spain is the most perfectly vaccinated country in the world, but that’s what happened. This means that the vaccines that have been released so far are not very good. A more complete vaccine should be released.

What is the wait for? Only the 65 years old up (and health/risk workers) have had the third dose thus far.
No they’re not. With this high number of cases, ICUs beds in use and death numbers are way way way lower than last winter.

TLDR: London is starting to look like it might not be terrible. Probably thanks to vaccines and boisters and some self control hasn’t hurt but early days at start of a trend.
A bit of a London centric update may help. London is ahead of the rest of the UK with omicron.
Our January peek for infections per day was 14k, they are now about 20.5k now. Previously the hospital admissions have lagged infections by a week, so NHS should be getting propper screwed but admissions don’t seem to be the same steep upward curve.
Omicron infections show an unusual discrepancy between 60+ and younger, with 60+ having much lower rates for the first time in this pandemic. 60+ are going to mix less but also they would be much more likely to have had a booster. This should result in fewer deaths.
There has been a larger increase in people aged 0-5 going into hospitals with Covid though.
Finally, London may also have already hit our peek. This could be delays in reporting results, the virus burning itself out or people have listened to the government and been really careful so they don’t fuck over their Christmas by getting Ill or kill grandma by infecting her over the turkey.
Finally, finally, on boosters for Delta, protection Vs hospitalisation. 2 X AZ + Pfizer = 98.4%. 3 X Pfizer = 98.4% as well (different confidence intervals AZ may be fractionally better or worse).
