There’s quite a few elderly people who simply don’t trust / don’t need banks, cause they get just a tiny bit of cash from the mailman. And their kids pay their bills or they do it themselves at the post office.
True, Soviet communism was strong in Portugal and Spain.
In some places there is simply no infrastructure. No ATMs, no internet connection, just a bunch of elderly folks and a post office. Its not a remnant of communism, some places are just like that – forgotten villages slowly dying out.
Portugal is honorary Eastern Europe, as always
Why choose private Western banks? The more cash on hand, the stronger the country.
NO globalists!
30% of Romania. Wow!! That’s higher than I would expect
How is Denmark’s zero percent even possible?
i just turned 18 and i dont trust banks, my grandma made sure of that. maybe ill have to get an acc at some point, but i want to remain thief free for as long as i can. i keep my money in the money sock
It’s easier for older people i guess
Well, I’m adult and I do not have bank account or credit card. I actually prefere cash.
My grandma is 99 years old, she doesn’t need a bank. Mailman brings her pension in cash, she hands some of it to my mom to pay the bills, she does that by bank transfer.
Old people do not need bank account. This map is for people 15+, if it was for people aged 18-60 there would be close to 0% all over Europe
Not every 15-year-old needs to have an account, because why should they. However, banking in Poland is more developed than in Germany or France, where it stopped 15 years ago.
If not for “pay us 10 zł for possibility of transferring your money”, then those numbers would be way higher. People changed into paying online mainly because is far cheaper
Many people don’t know that their money in a bank is only available if there’s no crisis. In case of a crisis or even an emergency it may be not possible to withdraw your money from a bank. So having an considerable amount of cash at home seems wise. Dont ever fully trust banks, governments, institutions etc.
People distrustful if the system. Too many banks defaulting, communism ended barely 30 years ago.
Are you familiar with a concept of OLD PEOPLE, OP?
“Adults 15+” 15 is not an adult by any definition
Soviet communism in Portugal or Greece?
In most cases we’re paid with either cash or through a bank payment. We don’t have checks.
I guess it contributed, but you should see the map US. A lot of people use only cash there. People who are indebt also prefer using cash (repo man can take your money from your account). That’s also an important factor.
I would also add that the low percentage does not necessarily guarantee that the technology behind banking is advanced. In Germany the percentage is pretty low yet its hard to find a restaurant accepting cards, banks are using really outdated systems, offers on saving accounts are really bad and majority of accounts in classic, not neo-banks are subject to a monthly fee. I remember that two years ago my friend couldn’t have online account access in one of the major bank and when he wanted to transfer money, he needed to go and do it in person or deposit special slip in a designated mailbox. Old people have bank accounts but theres a lot of them still going to the branch to pay their bills because they dont know how else do that
Wtf, Romania?
That would explain portuguese
You misunderstood. It is called capitalism, you silly.
Yet another map where portugal is no different from eastern europe
Every time I am at the postal office to claim a letter because postman decide to leave only advice note I have to wait in fucking queue because someone is paying their bills. Every fucking time! Mainly they are ppl around 30/40. My mother 65 paying her bills via internet for 20 years!
