There’s only 525,600 minutes in a year. You’d need have a property ready and on the market every 52 seconds to keep up with our current migration. Ridiculous.
or getting on for one Tyneside region – that’s gonna be easy to build in a country full of Nimby’s –
or another way, are you going to splodge a new Tyneside on the map every year and see what it looks like in 20/30 years?
Not once, not twice, but *four* times in a row now did the Tories go to the country with a manifesto commitment with a pledge to reduce net migration, which the public then endorsed, and yet the Tories continue to let it rise.
Can anyone on here say with a straight face that this is sustainable and a good idea?
We’re rapidly approaching the better half of adding a million people per year to the population, but with a straight face it’ll be screamed bloody murder that this has absolutely nothing to do with the house prices or cost of living, or the burden on the NHS.
I find it entirely unlikely that’s 600,000 doctors we just added to the population…
So we need to build a new ‘Glasgow’ (UK’s 4th largest city) every year to keep up with this. Totally sustainable 🙄
So out of all of Brexit’s proposed benefits which ones have thus far materialised? Fortunately, I’m heavily insulated from the decisions that other idiots in this country choose to continuously make but you have to stop and wonder how idiotic you had to have been to vote to leave the EU. Anything happening in the country at present is the work of the Conservative government. Truly unprecedented in the lows they’re able to take this country to.
BuT it’s ThE SmAlL bOaTs ArE the PrObLeM!! ThE pApErS sAiD sO!!!
Seriously, small boat arrivals are generally people trying to claim asylum, and yes, I’m sure there are some chancing their arm because there always is with everything.
But this is mostly legal migration, which is controlled by government policy on who can come in. If the government wants to tighten up those rules, that’s well within their right, but instead, they put all the blame on the small boats and claim only they can fix it, even though they’ve been in power almost 15 years with the ability to actually implement policies and enforcement to manage legal migration.
But, I think a lot of their money and promise of directorships and board memberships comes from companies who want high migration, at least partially to keep wages down.
I just don’t understand why this is even an issue. The government has full control over this unlike illegal migration, so it’s 100% their policy failure.
Immigration will never come down because it increases growth and keeps wages down.
No matter what any government says they will never, ever reduce it.
Wait times, house prices, traffic and pressure on services is all driven by the immigration numbers.
This is just the current Tory scheme to prop up housing prices.
606’000 yet we have massive skills gaps. What’s the composition of this 606k?
I bet not even a quarter (150k) are skilled workers for the areas we have labour shortages in.
More cheap labour to keep wages cheap.
Or Albanian gang members to run the coke and prostitution trade.
Forget Net for a second.. Gross figures mean that 1 in 50 people walking around, arrived last year.
Does that not seem insane to anyone else?
Net doesn’t tell the true story.
10 more years of this, and 1 in 5 will have arrived in the last decade..
Likely intentional by the tories to inflate GDP numbers artificially
The elephant in the room is that for 13 years we have had the rhetoric regarding migration but not any action one way or another. All of this is nothing new and the Tories have simply got away with a laissez-faire attitude towards migration without any scrutiny.
And in retrospect, no wonder. The media have been all too happy to generate the stories but very rarely willing to hold the government to account for what has been a core policy failure.
Record numbers of migration that we supposedly need to fill job gaps yet still many vacancies unfilled. Make it make sense. We don’t need migration, we need investment and training for natives. Shit ass, unproductive country that has sold anything worth having off. Mass migration only serves to keep wages low and the peasants in their place. Government won’t do anything to fix it because it actually benefits them.
The figures breakdown like this:
* 52,000 BNO (mainly Hong Kong)
* 114,000 Ukraine
* 76,000 Asylum granted
* 361,000 Non EU Study
* 235,000 Non EU Work
* 51,000 Non EU Family
* 29,000 Non EU Other
* 151,000 EU (not broken down into categories)
* 88,000 Brits returning
* 557,000 Emigrated
The emigration figures are not fed up Brits but mainly students going home again after 3 years of study. The number of Brits leaving is fairly stable.
was brexit really about migration, or where migrants came from?
Feb 23, 2016
Priti Patel, Britain’s minister of state for employment, believes exiting the European Union will provide a “massive boost” to relations with India, “I know that many members of the Indian diaspora find it deeply unfair that other EU nationals effectively get special treatment.
This can and will change if Britain leaves the EU.
This is happening as a direct result in under investing in our infrastructure and education.
Remember this is immigration we control and is a result of gaps in job markets and education placements. All things a sa country we can control.
Ultimately if we want to stop immigration, it is less about deterrent and more about improving as a nation.
UK:
“The NHS is under crisis, it can’t cope”
Also UK:
I don’t have time to read the detail, but this shouldn’t be a surprise right? The past year the UK has taken in hundreds of thousands of Ukranians, Afghans and Hong Kong (ians…ites?).
It’s high but it’s a outlier right?
Not only renters will suffer. Infrastructure and schools are turning into a nightmare. And these immigrants are being deceived too. Thinking they’re coming to a place of wealth and opportunity when they’re being used as fodder for cheap wages.
I’m honestly confused.
We have a shortage of teachers, doctors, labor in general. Migration is usually argued as one potential solution to this, yet half a million migrated to this country and we still have the exact same shortages as before…
I’m sympathetic to mass immigration, however:
* When given the choice, people consistently vote against this.
* The government has zero intention to build housing to house all these people, I still remember when people insisted that immigration is not a major cause of rising house prices.
* The government refuses to invest in necessary infrastructure *anywhere*, including London.
* government has no intention to ever invest in its own people, and we are seeing more and more people who are left behind, it seems that entire areas are written off by the government as being in decline, and their housing policy damns people to continue living there.
The idea that a country can import millions of people and expect it to wok is just insane
The Tories pay lip service to the issue of immigration, but do nothing about it when in power. Labour circles claim anyone who suggests immigration is an issue is racist.
Eventually this will result in extreme parties gaining support from the electorate.
I imagine the *take back our borders* crowd are feeling exceptionally sheepish this morning…
Can I just point out that this figure is not accurate and is a complete fudge by the Tories to downplay the numbers.
606k is legal migration. There are also 172,758 aslyum seekers not accounted for in that figure according to the BBC.
Ahh immigration, the topic that makes people burst into flames. Let’s face it, the immigration the UK is seeing is not sustainable, I repeat, not sustainable. Although there is a lot of land not built upon, we need the farming land and moreover, a lot of the land is not suitable for farming and we must protect certain areas.
We are extremely reliant on importing food. Woke culture has made criticism of immigration a taboo, it shouldn’t be. Brexit was supposed to lower immigration but it has gotten exponentially worse since the UK left the EU, people were lied to. The country is in a mess.
I read an interesting book by Mike Berners Lee recently who said that GDP is a terrible measure to determine the health of a country and instead we should be looking at things such as, to paraphrase, a mental/health index. If we only need immigration to raise GDP and by allowing immigration we are reducing all measurable happiness qualities and increasing mental health issues arising from additional noise, stress, pollution, etc then how can immigration of such levels be defended?
I just don’t get it….
Brexit… then the housing crisis…. now the cost of living crisis due to inflation…
Big cities like London overpopulated as is already.
A right wing govt. claiming for over a decade it will get the numbers down.
Yet, there are still 600 000 people a year (legally, what are the estimate for illegal migration) coming to live in the UK?
Can we not have a system similar to Australia? Seems to work for them.
If people are bringing in skills that the country needs let them in.. If not let them find somewhere more suitable..?
Play the Jeremy Kyle show at every airport, ferry port and migrant camp. Let them know before they take the trip
All the usual drivel in these comments that we NEED huge amount of migration to keep our economy going. Like society is just one big Ponzi scheme that needs infinite amounts of migrants going in the bottom end.
If you think a city almost the size of Leeds appearing every year out of nowhere is sustainable you are deluded beyond belief.
Race, religion etc makes no difference whatsoever, it’s unmanageable on numbers alone.
Another day, another depressing headline. The quicker I die, the better. Please let it be soon.
