I graduated last year from my high school in the Netherlands with a HAVO diploma. I want to go to college in the US but they calculate grades differently over there. How can I convert my Dutch high school grades to US high school grades? I’ve looked at different websites but they don’t take into consideration that the Dutch school system is divided into different levels.

  1. Not sure if we can actually put non-Dutch posts on here. But I went to the states after my VWO many summers ago. I had to do the SAT 1 and 2 and a TOEFL test at the time. These are recognised by the education system in the States. They require this as well from any Americans and overseas students. You could also check websites that help you with this or even offer scholarships from https://fulbright.nl or https://www.nuffic.nl.

  2. Have you spoken to any of the universities/colleges you’d be interested in attending? They’d probably know best about conversion and admission requirements.

  3. You can hire a specialized organisation to do this. It’s recognized in the US. People do it all the time for their bachelors and masters.

  4. Just contact the guidance councelor of the college you’d like to attend, they’ll know if your level is sufficient or they’ll know exactly where to go to have it checked. You’re not the first foreign student they see…..

  5. I don’t think it is convertible at all, the Dutch system seems way too different to me than the American system.

Just think of this way; Americans like to talk about “straight A’s” which should be the highest grade and “good” students have that for (almost) every class. Meanwhile it is unheard of in the Netherlands to have all 9’s or 10’s . Maybe in one or two classes.
