Dealing with the Neighbours: The case for an affiliate membership of the European Union

  1. So will this proposal allow membership without the EU courts making final decisions and restrictions on freedom of movement? That would completely undermine the European Union ideals. So it seems like trade deals are only way forward.

  2. This solves today’s problem but seeds a load more further down the road. If countries at the core are so keep to converge, there is nothing stopping them independently merging together into mega-states within the existing EU framework. At least then the citizens of the merging parties would get a clear statement of what was proposed and a vote on it.

  3. Seems like a good idea, effectively having a multi speed Europe with a looser collection of affiliate states such as the UK, Norway, Switzerland (perhaps Poland) with the rest making up a more integrated inner core.
