Somewhere in Germany today (any idea where?)

  1. That looks like a beech marten, very common all over Germany and likes to live near human settlements. This could be anywhere in Germany.

Beech martens are opportunistic omnivores — they’ll eat anything, animal or vegetable, that they can. They are expert climbers, as you can see; they’re normally nocturnal, and nest in rocks, other animals’ abandoned dens, or manmade structures, particularly barns and attics.

As cute as they look, they are aggressive, have a very nasty bite, and can cause quite a bit of damage. They often clamber around the underside of cars and will chew anything rubbery they find, including things like brake lines if they are exposed. In a typical year there will be around a quarter of a million reports of damage caused by martens.
