OTD in 1989, the first partially free elections in the Soviet bloc

  1. It’s worth noting that the election was still rigged but the Left (PZPR) lost in every district but one where it competed with the opposition. Ironically, they (now SLD) did much better in the totally free 1991 election and then won in 1993.

  2. Just yesterday or so the main topic of Poland’s conservative newspaper Rzeczpospolita was the big question: “ARE WE LIVING IN A DEMOCRATIC DICTATORSHIP?”. Today they published a poll that 40% of Poles believe they live in a dictatorship. Something that has been very much apparent to outsiders, appears to actualize for the people living in Poland, as well. People who fought for a free Poland didn’t fight for Poland that is a mafia state. Today’s march for democracy in Warsaw is the only proper way to honor those 4th of June 1989 elections – even if they were not so free, but they were the beginning of hope, at least.
