UK To Ban Foreign Students From Bringing Family Over

  1. Tbf when I was a student looking at a 5 bed student house to take over with my mates we found one in which it seemed a couple international students had brought over their families for work (not sure if legal or not) so there were 20 ish people living in there.. the lights were mostly off and there were huge bags of rice and tin foil everywhere, very strange.

  2. There must be lots if mature students as mist UK students that go abroad to study do so on their own. I can understand bring your wife and kids BUT only if you can look after them.

  3. Sorry, what?

I’m not sure how this is a thing – with the exception of PhD’s, which are basically research jobs, how can people bring people other for their one year course?

  4. Student visas DO NOT allow for access to public funds. They’ll have to pay to use the NHS (via annual subscriptiom fee) and won’t be entitled to any benefits.
The only thing I can see them doing is sending their children to school whilst they’re here.

They also pay the international rates to attend university in this country. This is the income universities depend on to avoid the need for govt subsidies.

If this is banned, a mature studen with dependents is just going to choose another country. This is a stuuuupid populist move meant to please moronic xenophobes regardless of your political leanings.

The comment section on here filled with misinformation really fills me with a lot of worry for this country.

  5. So much misinformation in this thread. I work in this field, my job is issuing the documents to international students and helping with visa applications. They cannot bring siblings and cousins etc with them. It is literally only spouses and young children.

It’s expensive, costs a lot of money and evidence of being able to fund the lives of those you bring with you.

It’s rarely used. I’ve worked in the industry for ten years. I can count on one hand the number of students I’ve worked with that brought dependents. Students are the *least* problematic category of immigrants we have. That doesn’t mean there aren’t issues with credibility and genuineness, that’s a risk in every type of visa. However, for the value we get for having them, it far outweighs any negatives. They are literal cash cows and are the only thing keeping most universities afloat. They also are strictly policed and monitored (I should know, it’s my job).

The student route does not contribute towards citizenship either, so they can’t claim that studying here for however many years is a reason to claim citizenship. They can, at most, apply for a two year working visa after studying (which again, does not contribute towards citizenship) after which point they either move to a proper working visa category (requiring sponsorship from an employer) or they leave.

  6. As usual this is also skipping the part where removing the extra money that foreign students bring into the system, without doing anything to shore up domestic funding for HE, is just going to cause the system to collapse. Its already near breaking point.

  7. If that is the case then surely many UK colleges and universities are going to close soon with this legislation. A lot of universities and colleges fully depends on foreign students and companies in UK are reluctant to provide work visa for foreigners and in a country where there is shortage of work force this idea seems saying close colleges and universities and worsening the work force shortage in turn even longer late trains longer NHS queues and etc etc

  8. So strange. Why reduce immigration by discouraging those with the skills we need from coming here. When people talk about immigration I doubt they mean highly educated and skilled workers…they mean people coming illegally on small boats…

  9. So, let me get this straight. They want a brain drain by making it very difficult to immigrate to the UK (see other comments re. wives etc immigrating here) and suppressing wages, and they also want the Universities to go bust as they have a big reliance on international student fees.

It’s clear what the agenda is. A stupid (or more stupid) populace that cannot think for themselves.

I think I may join the brain drain. This country is truly heading in a terrible direction with no hope in sight.

  10. Usual stupidity from the Tories- studied alongside some super smart Malaysians back in the day- they’re all now university professors… came to Scotland with their wives and young families while doing their PhD’s – they studied in the U.K. because of its high standard universities, liberal values and to develop their English language skills.. they spent a fortune on rent, supporting local businesses and taught many Scots about Malaysian culture and food. This was an enriching experience for everyone who met them- the U.K. is slowly becoming even more of a global backwater than it is already as it continues to turn its back on the rest of the world… the Tories really are f”@kin’ idiots for continuing to pander to those people who’re still fighting the Second World War or their voters who’ve never left their home village since 1973 and still think it’s okay to name their dog after the Dambuster Labrador ..

Isn’t it so ironic Sunak, Braverman, Zahawi etc are trying to pull up the drawbridge to prevent people like their hard working parents from entering the U.K. ?

Do they not provide the evidence that high skill, ambitious migrants are a positive thing for the country? … just saying..

  11. I’ve been separated from my fiancé for 1 year this week. It’s really hard 😥 I’m praying that all goes well with my visa application and that I get into the UK to be with him by summer.

  12. And those folks doing MAs and PhDs will take their asses elsewhere. The UK continues to find problems where it doesn’t exist and chops its nose off to spite their face.

  13. I mean, why? Attracting foreign students is a good business. They cannot work and they have to pay a lot to stay and they rarely be able to stay after graduation anyway.

They are essentially using their money from their home country and spending that money in the UK, this is basically a net GDP gain overall. Last time I check, this is a multi billion dollar business.

Seriously, why is the UK trying so hard to damage its own economy? This restriction won’t solve any of the housing, health care issue but damage an overall reputation while attracting foreign students. Didn’t you learn anything from Brexit?

  14. I know what’s a great idea! Make the UK less attractive and harder for international brains to come in. Ensure that the UK is terrible for tech companies, so all the UK graduates move abroad. Complain when the economy is failing

  15. So they don’t want UK students evidenced by dropping every student with £30k of tuition debt, and now they want to dissuade foreign students as well.
Who *do* they want in universities?

    Oh, wait! *Rich people.*
They *just don’t want poor people in Uni anymore…*

  16. Curious if this could apply retroactively to the post graduate visa. My family and I moved here last September for me to complete my masters degree. I’ll be able to apply for my post study visa in September of this year. We signed a 2 year lease (and paid rent in full up front), moved our pets over, moved our kids and all of our belongings. We’ve spent thousands in visa fees, IHS surcharges, tuition, and general life expenses. The plan was to be here 3 years and try to find a job that can sponsor me. Terrified that they will change this before we can apply for my post grad degree and we will be have to leave this year.
