  1. I love this scene. From the girl in the wooden shoes,the little boy giving her ‟the look”, the basket that appears to have a cat sleeping in it,to the one dog that requires a muzzle. It’s a cool Dutch time capsule.

  2. There was a video posted on here about a year ago of a dog cart crossing a small bridge, with a windmill and a boat in the sloot behind them, recoloured from an old silent film. It was really interesting with a lot of things going on (the boy leading the dog is looking at the camera and the cart wheel goes in the water). Haven’t been able to find it again though.

  3. It seems idyllic, but a lot of these dogs had a horrible life, hence the Dutch word: Hondenleven. Due to the bad practices a law was introduced in 1911 to improve the life of these dogs. In 1962 there was a full ban on using dogs to pull cars, which currently results that if you still want to use dogs pulling cars for sports events, you need a special permit.
