  1. And how are we supposed to know “what are these pancakes”. We were not there, we don’t have x-ray vision. You’ll have to show us the inside.

  2. Cooked fermented cabagge or not cooked. With some fat sausage. Wont regret it. The red soup is called Aukstā zupa or ( dont be terrified ) – cold soup. Best of the Best. If you have a chance take a sklandrausis. But dunno where you can get it in Riga.

  3. Whasts the filling in pancakes? Theres meat, ham + cheese, and for dessert or breakfast with cottage cheese.

  4. Try ‘maizes zupa’ – rye bread soup with some dried berries, sometimes with nuts and some whipped cream, cranberry sauce.

    Try buckwheat dishes.

    Fish, like pike or perch.

And as some mentioned, sauteed sauercraut with blood sausage or ‘kupāti’, boiled potatoe with pickled herring and cottage cheese.

Dark rye bread with smoked lard and some garlic.

  5. yesterday I literally just finished my giant pot of aukstā zupa after eating it for 3 days straight and now I want it again 😭 Except this post made me remember how much better it is in Latvia 💔

  6. Not a fan of the ‘cold soup’, but them pancakes be delicious, depending on what was in them meat or curd, both pretty tasty.

  7. I could really go for some Pankukas right now too. Pankukas and some hot beet soup would hit the spot.

Be sure to hit up a grocery store like Rimi to snag yourself some Sieramaize (cheese bread). Between the tray and the table, it seems like you went to Lido. If you haven’t already tried it, I really enjoy Lido’s Pineapple chicken and Sašliki. And if your travels lead you to Liepaja, be sure to visit Pastnieka Maja (Postmaster’s House) because they had some of the best food I’ve ever eaten. Period.

I hope you enjoy your time in Latvia! There’s lots of history to learn and lots of good food to eat!

  8. Are they filled with meat? My mother used to make them & they were delicious! Even though I’m Latvian, I hate to say it but I’ve never made them. I can cook or make just about anything else. I guess I’m going to make some soon. I have a hankering for them & they are very easy to make!
