So I found some Swiss Francs presumbably from when my great grandma went to Switzerland and I just wonder if I can use any of them when I go to Switzerland in the future.

The 20 centime coins were made in 1959 and 1960 and the 5 centime coins were made in 1944, 1955 and 1966. You can see the dates for all the other coins in the photo.

If I’ve understood what I’ve read online, the 5 centime coins that I have are no longer in circulation but the rest of them are still okay?

  1. These are all still in use. 1 and 2 rappen and not in use anymore, 5 are very common.

Some of these may be worth more then their printed amount tho because of the metal they are made of, so maybe get them checked or google the year and material, especially for silver

  2. Everything is still legal except for the 5 cents/Rappen. Those you have are old ones made out of nickel. The current ones are mostly made out of copper.

For the other coins you porbably can get more money out of them than what is written on them, because back in the day the silver content of the coins was higher than today.

  3. Actually, only the 20 centimes are legal tender (as they were minted after 1938). The ½, 1, and 2 Fr coins are made with silver and are worth more than face value.

You could exchange them for face value at Swiss National Bank, but they have more collectors and sentimental value.
