There is a growing part of the population using electric bikes for any distance. These bikes use electricity that may or may not be sourced eco friendly, in either case this could have been energy saved. Plus we now need to get rid of the battery after a while. At the same time, there is a staggering rise in accidents involving these bikes. Also, the motor of the bike does the effort, not so much the Dutch(wo)man. Dutch (wo)men become more obese as a result.
Beetje flauwe titel, toen in nog in Brazilië woonde fietste ik ook niet “als een Nederlander” want dat kon gewoon niet. In de eerste stad waar ik woonde in het binnenland van São Paulo was het veel te warm en was er heel veel hoogteverschil, een combinatie die me ondanks vele pogingen echt te veel bleef.
Na tweeënhalf jaar verhuisden we naar de hoofdstad van de staat die tevens São Paulo heet. Daar zou fietsen als een Nederlander misschien best kunnen. Er is nog steeds redelijk wat hoogteverschil, maar het ging naar mijn gevoel op de meeste plekken wel. Het was er ook minder warm, buiten de echte zomermaanden december, januari en februari. Toch fietste ik er niet, veel te gevaarlijk dankzij een gebrek aan voorzieningen en een enorm aantal motoren en auto’s. Om nog maar niet te beginnen over het over straat gaan met waardevolle spullen als een laptop. Dan zit je echt liever in de auto. Maar daar valt in theorie nog iets aan te doen allemaal.
Ik woon nu trouwens in zuid Duitsland en daar zie je dat de fiets langzaam aan terrein wint t.o.v. de auto. Mondjesmaat komen er ook betere fietspaden ed. al ontbreekt het vaak nog wel aan veilige oversteekplaatsen. Maar er is hoop voor een Nederlander die weer “fietst als een Nederlander”.
Ehh, weak article. I like the idea, but it’s just not realistic. It stays an ‘if’ article. ‘If’ I invested in apple 30 years ago I’d be rich. Stupid ‘if’ articles.

Edit: dumb spelling mistake
If the Dutch would cycle now as they did 50 years ago the emissions would be even better. Hardly anyone still uses a normal bike and car ownership has almost trippled.
Don’t forget the amount of road maintenance we don’t have to do when more people would cycle.
We should bike more anyway. So many cars in our town centre. It doesn’t really fit, so they drive at a walking pace. At that point, why not just walk anyway? And you can’t really get past them on your bike, they take up too much space. It’s very annoying.
We’re almost like Americans, they also drive to the nearest supermarket. But at least they’ve got an excuse with their ridiculous urban sprawls that don’t have a single shop anywhere.
Hartstikke leuk idee, maar landen als America zijn volledig ontworpen op de auto. Dus die “if we cycle” is niet erg realistich. Fietsen is in dit soort landen recreatief.
De Nederlandse fietsliefde komt niet omdat we allemaal klimaatstrijders zijn, maar omdat we alles op fietsafstand ligt met nauwelijks hoogteverschillen
The problem is not transport, the problem is housing: dutch people need to drive hours to work because it’s expensive and next to impossible to move close to work.
One of the issues causing this is taxes: dutch people get subsidized to drive to work, but by moving you pay a lot of taxes. Reversing this and at the same time building more and varied is something most countries do. For some reason NL is a hard learning bunch of people.
Ik woon in Canada en volgens mij is het niet realistisch om “als een Nederlander” te fietsen. alles is letterlijk zo fucking godverdomme ver. er is trouwens bijna geen fietspaden/fiets infrastructuur en het is best gevaarlijk als je in de stad wil fietsen. Dus de meeste fietsers (zoals ik) zijn wielrenners dat buiten de stad in het platteland fiets.
