Another magical FG policy , drive up the intensity of farming in 2014 by scaping quota etc. Now Biodiversity is getting destroyed and emissions are sky high.
Plant more native woodlands. I know there’s some initiative starting, but it should really be top of the green agenda.
Start rewilding our upland areas and wildlife will bounce back quickly..
Look at Knepp estate.
“The kestrel has had a 53pc decline in 20 years.”
Seen my first kestrel 5-6 years ago, there’s now a couple pairs in my area.

I’d be a lot more likely to support green initiatives if it wasn’t for the Greens
Well that what happens when you decimate an actual forest and plant 1000s copies of exactly same tree
Brian Leddin won’t have to worry after he’s voted out next year. He’s really turned Limerick against him.
More intensive agriculture is a consequence of the drive for cheaper food, cheaper food helped those who struggled to afford to eat. So if the availability of food decreased 10% around the world guess who will struggle the most.
And for the the record I think I the loss of biodiversity is something that should be stopped, the over use of insecticides and fertiliser is a huge problem. And it is the loss of insects that is one of the key drivers for the loss of birds. It is just the there are consequences to actions. Some things require a bit of thought.
Also the headline and article is click bait and I know I fell for it, but I am seriously disappointed in the quality of the Green Party TD’s. I expected them to be better but they are as dumb as any other party.
Ah yes, the blame agriculture but provide no solutions or ideas argument.
I’d be interested in seeing the data from the last 10 years when all of the new wildlife schemes came into action. There’s a balance to be found here somewhere for example Coillte (already a goverment agency) could plant native forests as opposed to Silka Spruce dead zones. Or all new forests being planted could require a minimum amount of native planting.
Food is expensive enough as it is and then we have cunts like this. Listen there is loads of public land rewilding can be done and native trees can be planted before they stop our food supply. What the fuck do the greens want us to eat?
He said it’s less than 1% of the GDP which the GDP in not accurate judge of things agri sector makes 9bn a year and employs 170k people 7 percent of all the workforce in the country where are these people going to work then?
Maybe there should be a survey of agricultural land and the least productive 10% set aside for nature / rewilding? Likelihood is we already know where that is?
Or just abandon Leitrim.
And the damage fertilizers are causing to our waterways and fish stock
Greens telling it like it is as per. Their policy of speaking the truth while in office will probably leave them decimated at the next elections but it sure has been refreshing to hear a party calling it like it is.
Domestic cats kill 4 million birds here every year……..Ban Cats!
I have absolutely I no doubt intensive agriculture has decimated Irish bird life, particular since the government & department of agriculture pushed ahead with policies like harvest 2040. Encouraging minimum animal stocking densities, penalising farmer for leaving ungrazable land, mandatory fencing of upland commonage etc.
One thing I will say about the decline over the last 30 years, that no one wants to acknowledge, is the decline in the species mentioned in the article have a direct correlation with the successful reintroduction of large birds of prey and their subsequent population explosion.
The decline of the curlew is a classic example of this, this goes hand in hand with the increase in Eagles numbers as ground nesting birds are easy prey for such predators.
It would be interesting to see a graph of raptor numbers, and their increase over the last 30 years, laid against a graph of the other species population collapse.
Great conversation on TheLast Word just there about this. I hate to sound like someone letting their biases affect their interpretation, but the IFA rep sounded like he was ill prepared because he knows they have such a grip on government they don’t even need to make an effort in pleading their case.
The other lad was quoting studies and hitting multiple different negative data points while the IFA lad would just retort with “trickle down economics….rural Ireland bla bla bla”.
He’s not wrong
The mass insect population decline probably has something to do with the mass bird population decline.
