Senior Tories say Trump-style takeover could precipitate party meltdown

  1. To be honest, they’d kind of deserve it. You look at the Wellingborough Conservative newsletter from not long ago asking what they can learn from Trump. They have plundered and ruined our country and are left with culture wars and cruelty. If the party melts down, then it is deserved.

  2. The erg took over about ten years ago. Now it’s just complete loons in their safest seats, in the lords and in senior positions.

Luckily they will be gone for decades this time. No one young wants to vote for them and folk aren’t getting more conservative with age

  3. I don’t get it, what’s their end game? Who the hell do they think is going to vote for far right loons except other far right loons?

  4. “Trump-style takeover”

Didn’t this already happen when TM adopted UKIP’s policies wholesale, followed by the election of Budget Trump as leader?

  5. They are totally going Trump, the conference the other week showed that. Suella Braverman has become a parody of Sarah Palin, Rees-Mogg is such a bad contemptible joke he shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near serious politics. They use to be worried about being seen as the nasty party now they simply don’t give a toss.

  6. Here we go again. When they win, everything is fine. But as soon as there are problems then it’s cover your arse time. Then begins the backstabbing, two-faced, lying. There isn’t much mention over giving the voters what they had promised at the last election. When it comes to the next election people will not be able to choose the best, but the best of the worst.

  7. There are Tory youths out there. Narrowly educated and privileged dunder-cnuts with out perspective taught competition and not cooperation makes our nation great.

  8. I think if Nigel Farage took over as Reform UK leader, and led on a platform of economic reforms, he’d pose a serious challenge to the Conservative Party. Out of all the Euroskeptics he seemed the most charismatic and sane, with all the right-wing Tories just jumping on the bandwagon he built.

  9. The part is already destroyed. Boris Johnson has done an exemplary job of destroying the big tent that the tories used to rely on.

His “get brexit done” election was a successful last rile of the dice and he pulled in voters across the spectrum and with 42% of the vote got his majority. He was helped by Jeremy Corbyn being so easily attacked by the right wing press and not engaging on the brrexit theme of the election.

That tory coalition has fallen apart as fast as his own government fell apart. The tories ejected all their moderates so now you have the loony fringe in charge and positioning themselves to take over when Sunak loses the next election.

The problem is Labour will shy away from the needed electoral reform this tory nightmare has shown we desperately need. I will be voting lib dem in the hopes of a hung parliament and coalition if labour continue to refuse to commit to electoral reform.

  10. This is the wishful thinking of political infants.

The tories aren’t going into meltdown and it doesn’t matter what they do, a significant enough proportion of the population will vote for them to keep them in (or very near) power.

Even if they do lose the next election, we get a Tory-lite party for five years and then the conservatives return to maintain the status quo. There will be no “meltdown”, no “self-destruction” or anything of the sort.

Dream on, liberal centrists – looks like you’ll actually have to come up with a genuine alternative instead of being the tories with a few rainbow flags.

  11. Labour went to the far left, with Corbyn, and look where that got them. In UK politics you can’t fight extremism with another form of extremism. The British people hate extremists of any political persuasion, and will deal with them.

This vile brand of Conservative will be totally rejected at the next election. I have voted Tory, in the past, but never again after the last 10 years. They make me sick now!

  12. As an American whose watched this all go down.

Your tories are likely thinking they’re not the brain dead bigots that trump would appeal to. Let me disabuse you of this. In the US polls couldn’t find Trump skeptical republicans. Not even 1%. They didn’t exist. Well a few did and they all have newspaper columns. The smart, thoughtful, decent part of conservatism turned out not to exist. It was just ignorance and bigotry all the way down.

It turned out that the Conservative pundits didn’t know who was in the party with them. I’m going to assume this is the same situation. The Tory pundits likely believe that the ‘decent part’ (they know most of their voters are deplorable humans) of their voting block won’t go along with someone just because they say stupid and bigoted shit. They’re going to be surprised when there is no appreciative backlash to dumb bigotry in their constituency.

You guys might be better off as you don’t have a conservative media that’s dumbed down it’s viewers and listeners to the point that they can’t even count anymore. (I’m not exaggerating, American conservatives can’t count). I’m going to guess that most uk conservatives are consuming American conservative media but it’s not 100% of the constituency like in the US.

So I highly doubt it’s gonna melt the party down. The few, very few, intelligent conservatives will leave the tories but it’s gonna be less than 1%. You’re also going to pull a ton of old UKIP voters with the racism and ignorance. It’s going to be a net positive for the tories eventually.

  13. There are already many Trump style Tories holding key positions in this country. Braverman, Badenoch are both parodies of: Sarah Pallin and K. Owens.

  14. “Harking back to a golden age, with a wish-list of policies that are
completely absurd in a modern, developed nation, is for the birds.”

This is bang on target, and I think that the majority are smart enough to realise it. People read a lot of crap on Twitter and Reddit, etc, and belive that half the country are far right bigots, or raging communists, when in reality, these folk are only a small minority who make a lot of noise.

  15. Back in 2015 Cameron decided to swallow up the UKIP position to save his skin.

Now the UKIP/BNP element has eaten the Tory Party from the inside out starting with the membership.

Sad that they’ve wrecked our country in the process…

  16. They need to purge the party of all remainiacs . Then parliament and the civil service .Otherwise there will be a national meltdown .
