Hi,
I recently purchase some stuff from s market and I observed this kind of discount. It’s quite good so I want to understand how it works ? Like on which items and when it’s applicable ? There was no discount labels of any kind. Let me know if you have any information on it.

During the closing hour, 30% off products turn into 60% off products. There should be a -30% sticker on them. Remember to check the best before date every time you buy ’em, because they will spoil quick
Usually discounted items are marked with a high-vis big red sticker. These are discounted due to the expiration date. After 9 pm, they usually double the discount to 60%. Could be that they forgot the sticker or something. You can check the barcode for a replacememt sticker that indicates the discount.
Vegetables and fruit don’t have any discounts, although in the near future there probably will be (I work at S-ryhmä).
Talking about discounts, it’s useful to know 2 different Finnish phrases:
– “Parasta ennen” = Best before = it’s harmless to eat the product 1-3 days after the best before date has passed. Well, dairy products might start smelling funny so I’d sniff before consuming them.
– “Viimeinen käyttöpäivä” = Final day to use = I strictly follow this rule and never eat things that have expired past the viimeinen käyttöpäivä.
