I’ve no idea what the cause is – most likely some psych damage from lockdown I would guess. But there’s definitely something unusual in the current Y7-9 kids. Not all of them by any measure, but significantly more of them so as to cause a shift in the attitudes of the whole.
Imo so many more people seem more self serving and less conscious of others since covid. There feels like there’s more of a ‘the world must suit me’ approach to life rather than being part of a society
And those of us who have criticized and questioned lockdowns as having damaging effects for generations to come were ridiculed, silenced and banned (on Reddit). And now we are slowly finding out we were right all along, and that’s just one aspect of it.
It’s almost as if locking people away for almost 2 years wouldn’t have any consequences. Who would have thought.
The kids that were at home during the lockdowns not only lost learning and socialisation they also lost skills in being able to focus and concentrate from being on screens all day long. Even if they were doing some school work it was rarely for a whole day, couple of hours max. Lack of socialisation plus being behind in learning plus losing ability to focus is a toxic mix in teenagers, who have undeveloped impulse control and emotional regulation skills. And that’s the ones who weren’t at home witnessing DV or worse.
Yeah there’s been a real increase I’m issues with younger teens in my part of London as they police can’t do anything aside occasionally detain them for a bit. Recent swarms of them run infront of cars, stop cars then jump ontop of them and kick/punch the sides, sometimes they break into these nice high rise tower blocks and throw rocks off the top when they get to the roof which has narrowly avoided hitting people but certainly smashed some windows of flats and cars. Even on the train today some 13 Yr old girl with her mum and I guess BF (mid 30s?) Was playing music on her phone or watching tik tok so I said please can you turn it down, she did and the mum/bf looked at me, 5 mins later the boyfriend starts playing music on his phone and glancing at me…. its just a bit confusing as if he needs to assert his authority.. so weird, so it’s partly parents that enforce this to an extent I guess.
That isn’t because of covid though it’s because of the lockdown tyrants.
13+ years of Tory hate being spewed daily is to blame, plus less services to keep people occupied, less money to enjoy life, austerity, etc etc etc, the violence was on the increase long before covid and lockdowns, but, when covid and lockdowns came along they were like the spark that blew the top off the volcano that had been bubbling up ready to erupt for a very very very long time.
I think Covid has changed the way we view authority figures for two reasons.
The first one is obvious; quite a lot of them lied and the rules ‘everyone’ had to follow didn’t apply to them. That’s fairly easy to figure out.
The second, however, is more insidious. The ‘utterly unprecedented’ nature of Covid means you can’t even trust an authority figure acting with the best intentions, because what they say with authority and reason may change to be a lie anyway. ‘Schools won’t ever close for an extended period of time,’ you say? Nope! Wrong, actually, they did. ‘You’ll never be able to use a computer to access lessons’- yeah, actually, they did. Why should anyone trust anything pronounced with authority anymore, in the wake of an event that made everything a joke?
Nothing to do with declining staffing then, teachers thoroughly fed up and over pressured (so many left after being screwed over when schools fully reopened).
There certainly seems to be a more ‘me me me’ attitude, and certainly in England the fascists in charge are pushing that approach.
Not just the lockdowns having an impact. Behaviour systems and discipline in Scottish schools tend to be more lax than in England
Social media has been increasingly exacerbating the worst people’s worst traits for years. COVID just seemed to jump it forward a bit.
Maybe Covid is merely correlation. Could it not just be that they’re all apathetic due to their life prospects?
If climate change doesn’t kill them, they’re unlikely to be able to afford a home, a family, or an education, and the consequences of their actions are no worse than that so what’s the point?
