When Owen’s Entertainment opened it had interactive historical displays about the area. There were actors getting kids involved in local history and grand plans for it to become a community hub.
Now, all that has gone. There’s no community hub. The displays and actors have all been binned and all that is left is a very expensive amusement arcade with a bar and loud music. It’s basically a massive, tax payer funded arcade/pub.
Graham Owen himself sums the whole thing up. Hide the true ownership, lend it an air of respectability, allude to intentions of giving a toss about the community, give the corrupt Tories enough to make it look like a worthwhile cause – and then, once it’s all gone through, reveal it for what is really is. They stripped out anything that didin’t make a profit, they even got rid of Graham Owen.
Yes, what a struggling town like Hastings needs is a corrupt rich person to pretend to care about the community there, and for that person to have even more money thrown at them.
To be fair, former Debenhams are a blight on many city and town centres, therefore a grant to redevelop one does seem reasonable.
Whether it is a coincidence or not that this person is also a Tory donor is of course open to question.
All pretence is gone, the Government knows it will lose next election so they are preparing golden parachutes by giving public money to their donors.
Totally different to promising contracts to companies that have strong union representation.

I just think the money should have gone to an actual tourist attraction that would bring visitors. Even if it went on advertising or improvements for existing attractions. 150k towards what it’s for isn’t really a great deal in the grand scheme of things. The person gives 2m a year to the Tories anyway. It’s almost like getting a penny change to her. That being said, the whole mates thing looks dodgy on the surface but there’s a bunch of shops, restaurants and other businesses that will create jobs and generate more tax in a year that the £150k would cover. It’s a win for any government to do something like this.
