Britain can rejoin EU any time, says ex-negotiator Michael Barnier

  1. > Britain can reverse Brexit and rejoin the EU any time it likes Michel Barnier has said.

    > The former Brexit negotiator said the UK knew “exactly” what the conditions for rejoining the bloc were and that “the door is open”.

    > But speaking to ITV’s Peston programme Mr Barnier blasted Boris Johnson’s handling of talks with Brussels – accusing him of disrespecting his own signature on the deal he signed.

    > “The point is not to sign a treaty, the point is to respect the treaty and to respect its own signature,” Mr Barnier said of the ex-PM’s approach. “I never understood, I do not still understand, how the prime minister of such a country, a great country like the UK, can be able not to respect his own signature.”

    > Brussels was enraged by Mr Johnson’s breaking of commitments he signed up to in the Brexit deal – especially over the Northern Ireland border.

    > Mr Barnier accused Mr Johnson of creating “two lost years” when it came to the EU-UK relationship by dragging the UK into a legal battle over the Northern Ireland protocol. But he said the EU had changed and that the UK could return any time.

    > “The door is open any time. I always say that during the negotiation and after negotiation, the door remains open. “To be clear, the UK government, the current government, the next government knows exactly what are the terms and the conditions to be part of the single market to be part of the customs union to join the EU,” he said.

    > “The point is to know what would happen during this time. How far what would be the size of divergence between us and a new country. So this is a point.”

    > Mr Barnier, a former French government minister, led negotiations over the Brexit divorce deal, or withdrawal agreement, for Brussels.

  2. The only way the EU should allow the UK back into the EU is if they can crackdown on the kind of disinformation that led to Brexit in the first place. Otherwise, history will just repeat itself.

  3. Sure, if Britain conforms to all EU regulations, it should be quite straightforward. You know, things like paying your due, without rebate and introducing the Euro.

  4. Really can’t face the drama of that.

I think a couple decades of trial separation would benefit both parties. Stop the blame game on both sides, UK blocking everything in EU, EU regulations hammering all trade.

I say this as someone that voted remain and was fairly positive about the EU ideal (if not commission).

  5. I guess each member would still have to approve. I wonder what impact this could have on issues like Gibraltar?

  6. We can rejoin? That would be nice. We’d probably have to adopt the Euro which I wouldn’t mind but I know would irritate many. Fuck ‘em!

  7. Sure they can rejoin, but they probably couldn’t get an excemption from using the Euro anymore

Britain giving up Sterling? No way, I don’t see it coming

  8. I really don’t get the fuss over adopting the Euro.

What’s so good about the £? Can someone tell me? Are we all viciously loyal to the crown all of a sudden?

  9. Prediction: the thread about the Eurozone going into recession will get less upvotes than this thread.

Neither major UK political party is talking about rejoining so this is a moot point.

Pragmatic remain voters know if the UK ever rejoins, it won’t be for a long time (if ever). EFTA is much more likely in the medium/long term.

  10. Nah, they wouldn’t know what to do with all the cake and cherries, and there is no way they’d give up their fancy blue passports…

  11. I doubt even 25% of the country would vote for that. We had a good deal that we were stupid to give up, but I’d hate to see us rejoin under the new terms. I don’t see it happening in my lifetime.

  12. Thanks but no thanks. Let’s not forget that’s Germany who is currently in a recession and not Britain as much as all the experts predicted doom and gloom. We need to align closer to the US rather than Europoor who loves pointless regulation.

  13. Shouldn’t have left but rejoining is a big no no

Losing Sterling and having full intergration instead of us half assing it before would not be great

  14. Alright, but only if they have Nigel Farage and the other clowns as Prime Minister and government for a couple years first.

Just… to remember them the kind of people they chose to believe.

  15. People really don’t want to admit that Brexit is irreparable.

No realistic candidate for government is talking about the EU anymore. Even then, any move back towards the EU would involve compromising on Sterling or freedom of movement – neither of which the public would agree to anyway.

It’s one of the worst moves a western country has made in generations, and unlike other dumb right wing populist shit, there’s no fixing it. Unlike Trump or Meloni or those dickheads in Poland, there’s no voting it out. We’re out of the EU and will be for decades at least.

  16. Countries and supranational organisations currently experiencing a recession:

    •Eurozone ✅
    •Germany ✅
    •Brexit Britain ❌

    Really makes you think

  17. I appreciate the offer but the problem is that we have literally spent the last decade not don’t anything because the tories said we couldn’t because the EU would not let us.

I have never believed that was true. It was a convenient lie for a party that doesn’t want to create a prosperous country but wanted to be in power to give themselves contracts.

We are just about reaching the point where we might elect a government that will fix the damage started by austerity. Where we build houses that don’t have mould. Strike for pay raises. Regulate or water companies so that they don’t put shit in our rivers.

I sincerely believe we could have done all of these things and more while in the EU. But or media and politicians spent all their time saying that we had to be out of the EU to fix them. And while leaving the EU had done damage in itself. The majority of the damage has been from a decade of inaction and austerity.

If we seek to rejoin the EU now. Then we will spend the next decade unable to solve our problems. Because they will argue we don’t need to build houses. We need to rejoin the EU. As though houses will magically appear once we do in the way that was promised to happen after we left.

I don’t think I can deal with that. There are people in full time employment that use food banks. We need to fix our country before we can rejoin.

I have been an ally over the last decade when it came to matters about the EU. Please choose to be the same kind of ally in return. Because if you make me choose between the EU and those in working poverty around me. I’m not going to be able to ignore my neighbours.

  18. Adopt Euro and get into Schengen and you’re welcome back. Oh, and be less bigheaded assholes too.
