‘Stay in your lane!’: Oxfam faces backlash over ‘JK Rowling hate figure’ in LGBT cartoon

  1. A green dress? That’s it? I didn’t know she had the monopoly on wizards and green dresses

The way the headline was written I thought she’d have a wizard hat and robes

  2. British media when hate crimes against LGBT+ people skyrocket because of their constant anti-LGBT+ hit pieces:

    **I SLEEP**

British media when a charity negatively depicts an anti-LGBT+ celebrity in a cartoon:

    **REAL SHIT**

  3. I mean if she identifies with the character in a cartoon then she may be approaching self awareness

    Lunatic all round

  4. Honestly, If someone drew a cartoon depicting a hateful figure with red demon eyes, maybe the *last* thing I would do is go ‘oh hey, uh, this is me!’

Especially if I don’t believe myself to be a hateful figure with red demon eyes.

  5. Oxfam could have produced a really lovely pride video highlighting the issues they wanted to discuss.

There was no need to cause insult, or quite frankly, take a position in this (very complex) debate.

TERF is a term of abuse towards women, and a charity like Oxfam shouldn’t be using it. Particularly given their complicated history re: attitudes towards and treatment of women…!

  6. The hilarious bit being that taking offence at this pretty generic looking cartoon is basically her fans saying that she looks like that.

  7. The freedom of speech crew will be here any moment to support Oxfams right to be as offensive as possible to anyone they feel like. I mean this isn’t nearly as bad as wearing a football shirt with ’97, not enough’ written on it.

  8. Love how transphobes see the fucked up little face on the cartoon and are like “YEP THAT’S OUR GIRL RIGHT THERE”

  9. Extremely concerning that a very loud and disingenuous group of critics are being allowed to dictate how LGBTQ people talk about their own issues.

If we had let people like Anita Bryant dictate the language we used, we’d not even have equal marriage.

  10. And Oxfam removed it to boot. Nice one. Not only letting the TERF/FART’s win but sending the message that any criticism of them can be silenced if they complain loud enough.

  11. Imagine kicking off at one of the best known charities in existence, because you think their cartoon drawing looks like you

  12. Maybe it was based on JKR, maybe it wasn’t. But Oxfam were getting backlash before that connection was even made, and would probably still have been forced to delete it even if their caricature of a “hateful TERF” didn’t bear an uncanny resemblance to that photo of Rowling.

  13. Honestly this is a complete non-story. Cartoon looks a bit like a celebrity; celebrity’s insane cultish fans try to make a huge drama out of it; celebrity herself doesn’t have anything to say about it.

But of course it’s posted and upvoted so we can once again have the exact same “but does she *really* have a problem with trans people?” argument that we’ve been having for three years now.

  14. I dunno, you back people who label a shitload of transpeople as dangerous and suddenly everyone thinks you’re a hate figure. /s

Calling this out does smack a little of self-aware wolves though. Gotta laugh.

  15. >Others dismissed Oxfam’s statement as insincere and urged the organisation to “stay in your lane.”

What does that even mean? Imported from America, of course, but just as nonsensical there too. Aren’t thought terminating cliches grand?
