On this day 9/June/1889 the statue in photo was erected in Campo dei Fiori in Rome. The statue portrays philosopher Giordano Bruno burnt at the stake in that very same square on the 17/February/1600. The statue menacingly looks at San Peter Basilica from across the square.

Looks badass
Following the erection of the statue the Pope secluded himself in the basilica to “pray the curse away”.
I feel that its necessary to note that Bruno was a friar who was tried and executed for heresy because he espoused doctrines like reincarnation, alleged pantheism, and the denial of Christ’s divinity. He was a fascinating figure, an esoteric mystic and a leading figure in cosmology at the time.
Heretic.
-Would you like to retract and stay alive?
-I’ll stand my point, bitches.
One of the most brilliant minds of all time. I associate his name with a quote from Kingdom of Heaven: “Speak the truth always, even if it leads to your death…”
I’m guessing this was erected during the times of unification when the Italian king had a beef with the Pope?
