Ukrainian model Tatyana Bryk who featured on RTÉ Leaving Ireland to head home to Ukraine. Good to see that Ukraine is safer to live in now

  1. From what I’m hearing from back home. I wouldn’t blame any of the Ukrainian for heading home. Ireland’s not exactly made them feel welcome. The country managed to turn the Ukrainian refugees into a political issue using them as a scapegoat for the housing crisis our government caused the housing crisis was there long before they showed up and given our history I’m ashamed at the way the people have reacted. Cities in Ukraine have missles hitting civilian areas daily and we couldn’t rally together to support them disgraceful.

  2. Given the Russians are using missiles and drones to attack civilian areas on the regular, I wouldn’t be running back if I had kids in particular. Each can make their choice, but on 27 May Kyiv was celebrating its annual founding holiday and a guy was killed by falling debris from a drone at a petrol station. People were killed in Lviv (right near Poland, far away from the fighting) in late March by missile strikes.

  3. In the early weeks of the war, it seemed like Ukraine was about to be conquered entirely and people fled, knowing that any occupation was going to be ruthless. If I faced the prospect of my hometown being reduced to dust within days, with the threat of indiscriminate violence hanging over me and my family, I’d have left too.

It’s fair though that people have begun to reassess their options as the situation has to some degree stabilised. There’s a varying level of danger across the country, but nowhere is completely safe. A lot of people might want to stay away to ensure stability for themselves and their families until the whole thing is over, but it’s also fair that people would think about returning homes once they understand the situation better. Home is home.

I’d never judge anyone for either decision here. War is big and complicated, but the effects are personal. Best of luck to this woman and everyone else who I hope our country has been able to provide some comfort to.

  4. It is not a ‘safe’ place to be at all. It’s a country under attack from an unpredictable enemy that likes to attack infrastructurally insignificant places to let people know they can.
It’s a horrifying way to live in even the areas that seem the most secure.

  5. What choice do they have really, they can’t stay here long term because of the accommodation crisis and language barriers. I feel for them going back to Ukraine but they have little choice.

  6. I mean, some parts are currently relatively safe-ish for now, some parts are not.

So I guess it depends on if you have support there, a place to live, etc, in the bits that are relatively safe for now.

The only way it will be truly safe is once every last inch of land is taken back from the Russians, and significant work is done to render-safe the land (removal of UXO, etc).

  7. When you would rather live in a war zone the. ireland.

Not entirely uncommon with Ukrainian arrivals. Have seen a few gawk at our prices and would rather risk it back home

  8. A lot of Ukrainian children were taken out of the country when the war started. Some will be coming of age to fight this year, next, the year after, so there’s an obvious propaganda angle to this kind of SM post. People aren’t naive. Some will want to go back and fight, but I’m sure others might think that it’s wiser to stay away and avoid a possible conscription from Zelensky. Where will Ukraine get its future troops from as the war carries on? I wonder what the view is from Ukrainians who left?

  9. Ukraine is vast so there are certainly safer areas. Always at risk of Russia firing missiles but they don’t really have the luxury of wasting those anymore

  10. This post is strange. Why would you assume if they return there it is necessarily safer? I can guarantee you it’s not.

  11. Googled to see who she was, found an Indo article that states

    >The winner of Ukraine’s “Next Top Model ” made a new life by moving to Athlone

    And couldn’t stop laughing.

  12. Russia just blew up a dam flooding entire cities and drowning countless Ukrainians. How in the world is Ukraine safer?
