Makes sense people would flock to the easiest option over time once you provide some incentives.
Belgian towns are so tiny that I honestly fail to comprehend the insane obsession with cars. You can get from point A to point B in no time by cycling or even walking.
Cars just clog up the entire place and are a ghastly sight, not to mention the dangers they pose to everyone’s health directly and indirectly.
I have to say, i always ride a bike in Antwerp (those red velos) but it’s bloody dangereous riding a bike there. When you covered just around a km you could’ve died 15 times. Other bikes riding all over the place (espescially on the Keizerlei), people who walk where they want without thinking about watching the road (Meir), people riding there bike the opposite direction on the Italiëlei… Don’t get me wrong, good for climate, big fan but I’m from a small village where you don’t need to take a new insurance before crossing a road lol
I took it literally from the title before reading the title. ‘Well yes, I frequently overtake cars, they’re all stuck while the cycle path is (mostly) free.’
May this incentivize improving the infrastructure.
For a second there I read this as if it was somehow news that a bike managed to pass a car in traffic.
Which I thought was silly, with how clusterfucked traffic is oftentimes nowadays bikes tend to be the faster transport mode for a lot of situations so this didn’t surprise me in the slightest.
If it wasn’t for the fact that I genuinely need my car for work I would’ve ditched it without second thought, the only thing I still use it for outside of that is fetching the occasional crate of beer and the incredibly rare cases where I needed to move something large/heavy, but even here I could probably just borrow any of the dozen or so vehicles my family has for a day or so.
Zou je durven zeggen dat dit nog altijd komt ondanks het fietsbeleid in plaats van dankzij het fietsbeleid?
Tmoet daar plots beter ruiken.
I live in Antwerp and work 28km from home. 1015km of cycling last month. It would take forever if I use my car to get to work.
Most certainly.
As a consequence…
Traffic Jams at traffic lights at crossroads are not uncommon any more. Timing is set to accommodate cars, not cyclists.
Some “Fietsostrades” are dangerous areas during rush hours. Much like the E19 between Brussels and Antwerpen. Speed suggestions are considered purely informational.
Accidents waiting to happen.
En dat zonder pinkers waarschijnlijk.

That picture is not an exaggeration, it’s crazy busy on that bike path. When it was installed (at least 15 years ago) it was a luxury, it offered so much space. Now it has absolutely become too small and narrow for a two way bike path.
Also, the traffic lights there are a nightmare for cyclists, it’s just impossible to get a green flow there (especially because of the crowd). Some speed pedelecs/scooters/stepkes.. do try and endanger other cyclists by dangerously passing/using the side for the cyclists from the other way.
Let’s hope that bicycles will get more space now since they’re with so many. Need another schepen of mobiliteit first, though.
