Paris’s mayor tells residents to ‘cohabitate’ with city’s rats

  1. **From The Telegraph:**

After years spent trying to eradicate the city’s rat population, Paris’s socialist leader has switched tact, telling residents it is time to cohabitate with the rodents.Anne Hidalgo’s administration has announced the creation of a special committee tasked with examining how the city’s two million inhabitants and six million rats can exist in harmony.

“With guidance from the mayor, we have decided to set up a committee to look into the question of cohabitation,” said Anne Souyris, the city’s deputy mayor for public health, during a Council of Paris meeting.

According to Ms Souyris, a member of France’s Les Ecologistes Party, the committee will be tasked with coming up with a solution that will be “as effective as possible” and also “not unbearable” for Parisians.

The announcement comes nearly six years after the city launched a failed €1.5 million (£1.2 million) plan to curb the city’s rats.

Critics of the new approach accused Ms Hidalgo’s administration of failing to take the problem seriously.

“Anne Hidalgo’s team never disappoints,” said Geoffroy Boulard, mayor of the city’s 17th arrondissement.

    “Paris deserves better.”

Mr Boulard has long been a vocal critic of the city’s “proliferation of rats” and what he cites as a lack of funding to tackle the issue, comparing the previous €1.5 million plan to New York’s $32 million/€29.7 million (£25 million) rat fund.

  2. Seeing the current polls, she will probably be thrown down the sewage after the next elections.

We’ll see if she can “cohabitate” then.. 😏

  3. Ideally that will increase the cat population in the city. Maybe they can start to adopt a Turkey like cat culture in the streets, who knows.

  4. it would be good if they stopped with their surmulots they are really ridiculous, at least it change from the usual news we have and it’s funny but still…

  5. Paris and rats have a relationship that goes back over a millennium. It’s basically normal for a city that big and dense

  6. People love to hate Anne Hidalgo. As for me, she’s far from perfect. Fact remains that she’s NEVER said such a thing. The Telegraph’s title is misleading. Maybe they didn’t read their own article.

    Facts please, just facts.

  7. I have traveled all over the world and Paris is honestly one of the nastiest cities I’ve been in. Rats and it smells like garbage.

    Beautiful buildings though.

  8. This works on so many levels, as notoriously the culture and attitude in that city has devolved from ideals. Love the French but Parisians, please spank your kids.

  9. > non-cruel ways considered

I guess the natural way is out of question right? It would be cruel to flood the streets with feral cats (like in Istanbul for example). And it would cruel for both rats and the poor cats. Right?

  10. God i wish this was true. Rats are beautiful and wonderful and should overthrow humanity and take over the world.

  11. Anyone arguing in favour of cats being introduced is plain ignorant, cats pose much bigger problems than rats ever will. People just tend to ignore this because cats are cute and rats are not

  12. Europe… Do we want another Black Death? Because this is how we get another Black Death.

I don’t know about you, but I personally don’t have “Black Death” on my bucket list of things I need to experience.
